  • Is belief necessary? Narrative engagement, authenticity, and visit intention in haunted heritage tourism

Open Access•Aleksandra Vujko, Daniel Bakota•ARTICLE•Journal of Heritage Tourism•2026

This study interrogates a foundational assumption in haunted heritage tourism research: whether paranormal belief is a necessary determinant of visit intention. Based on a large-scale sample of 2,716 verified haunted heritage visitors, the study tests a structural model integrating Experiential Novelty and Arousal, Risk Perception, Narrative Transportation, Perceived Haunted Authenticity, and Paranormal Belief Openness. Results indicate that expe…

  • Commemoration, curiosity, and cultural change

Open Access•Aleksandra Vujko, Daniel Bakota•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism and Cultural…•2026

Holocaust memorial sites occupy a central position within global tourism and transnational cultures of remembrance. Although dark tourism scholarship frequently frames visitation as a form of moral pedagogy – progressing from historical learning to ethical reflection and emotional transformation – empirical evidence regarding the structural organization of visitor motivations remains limited. This study examines the configurational architecture o…

  • Variation of zinc concentrations in lake bottom sediments and implications for recreational use of water bodies

Open Access•Martyna A Rzętała, Maksymilian Solarski et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2025

Zinc content in bottom sediments was tested in 50 water bodies on the Silesian Upland (southern Poland). The metal was found in concentrations that ranged from 83 mg/kg to 38,400 mg/kg, that is, in amounts not previously found in any other water bodies worldwide (e.g., Hubertus I—38,400 mg/kg, Brzeziny—38,200 mg/kg, Morawa—35,300 mg/kg). It has been established that the bottom sediments of water bodies used for recreational purposes on the Silesi…

  • Toxic Metals, Non-Metals and Metalloids in Bottom Sediments as a Geoecological Indicator of a Water Body’s Suitability for Recreational Use

Open Access•Martyna A Rzętała, Robert Machowski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The study of bottom sediments was conducted within the basins of water bodies used for recreational purposes (e.g., bathing, fishing and diving) in the Silesian Upland and its periphery in southern Poland. Various concentrations of trace elements were found in bottom sediments, reflected by the following levels: Pb (30-3020 mg/kg), Zn (142-35,300 mg/kg), Cd (0.7-286 mg/kg), Ni (10-115 mg/kg), Cu (11-298 mg/kg), Co (3-40 mg/kg), Cr (22-203 mg/kg),…

  • The Impact of Revolutions and Terrorist Attacks on Tourism. Case Study

Open Access•Daniel Bakota, Magdalena MORGA et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental…•2022

The essence of the research concerns the impact of armed conflicts and terrorist attacks on the arrivals of foreign tourists with Egypt selected as the testing ground. It was found that revolutions and terrorist attacks have a negative impact on the development of the tourism industry – following the social unrest that took place in Egypt in the years 1997, 2011 and 2015, the number of arrivals of foreign tourists decreased by: 13%, 33% and 42% r…

  • The Disaster as a Factor in the Development of Modern Tourism. A Study Case Based on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Open Access•Daniel Bakota, Robert Machowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental…•2020

The destination which attracts tourists is the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone established in the area of radioactive contamination within a radius of 10 to 30 km around the plant. The main tourist attraction of the zone is the infrastructure of the inactive nuclear power plant, notably reactor no. 4 covered with a concrete and steel sarcophagus. The abandoned city of Pripyat, called the "ghost town", is also of unique value to tourism. The "Duga" radar…
