  • The Stone Skeleton

    Open Access•Thomas E Boothby, Dario Coronelli•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 2

Jacques Heyman’s 1966 article “The Stone Skeleton” has been influential in the assessment of masonry arches in general, including masonry bridges and gothic architecture. Heyman’s article relies on limiting assumptions about arch behavior, and concludes that an arch can be declared stable based on the location of a statically admissible thrust line within the arch. In the following commentary, we assess the validity of the assumptions made by Hey…

  • Modelling and safety assessment of observed sliding damage in a masonry rib vault

Open Access•Grigor Angjeliu, Giuliana Cardani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2023•Cited by: 1

Frequently observed damage in historic masonry vaults has always given rise to concerns on their stability. The effect of present damage on masonry vaults structural response should be taken into consideration during structural analysis as it clearly affects its behavior. The aim is to propose a method to study the safety of vaults, setting up a finite element model with a limited number of discontinuities, based on the consideration of the vault…

  • Constructive and structural analysis of a Baroque dome in Spain. The encamonada dome

Open Access•Juana Suárez, Francisco Javier Suárez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2020•References: 1

  • What is straight cannot fall

Open Access•Steven A Walton, Thomas Boothby et al.•ARTICLE•History of Science•2014

It has long been shown that medieval builders primarily used geometrical constructions to design medieval architecture. The thought processes involved, however, have been considered to be remote from the natural philosophical speculations of the Scholastics, who, following Aristotle, had taken the basis of physics to be the study of dynamics, or change. However, investigations of the Expertises of Chartres, Florence, Milan, and other documents re…
