Assimilation as a Motive for Identity
The text traces the changes in the ethnic identification of Muslims in the municipality of Gotse Delchev (with a special focus on the villages of Breznitsa, Lazhnitsa and Kornitsa, where assimilation, called the "revival" process, has taken the most victims). The four censuses after 1989 were used, the first of which (in 1992) – annulled be-cause it did not correspond "to the real ethnodemographic structure of the popula-tion".Quantitative and qu…
Atheismology“ or the Absurd as Normality
According to the author's point of view, atheist politics, expressed not only as secular-ization and profanation of religious objects and practices, but also as organized pog-roms on them, is a vivid manifestation of the totalitarian regime, not – an accidental perversion of an otherwise "normal" system. The only thing that seems "normal" (be-cause it is characteristic of the totalitarian state in principle) in this policy is the sys-tematic absu…
Nationalism - News or Heritage
The text is based on several empirical studies dealing with the question – whether the current nationalism in Bulgaria (compared to other Balkan countries) is inherited from previous periods, i.e. – whether it is "immanently inherent" to the Bulgarian nation, or whether it is the result of specific conjunctures and is activated on specific occasions. The question is also examined – whether the motivation for nationalist mobilization is always due…
The Revolution as Contracted Transission
A review of the book of Dimitar Ludzev “The Revolution in Bulgaria 1989–1990 in the Pantheon of Time” has been done. Publishing House of Bulgarian Academy of Science "Prof. Marin Drinov", 2022, ISBN 978-619-245-235-3
Disadvantaged Balkans. Trauma "Berlin Peace Treaty" in the Memory of Bulgarians and Serbs
The text further develops the author's earlier thesis about the typologies of Bulgarian and Serbian nationalism as dependent on collective memory – heroic or traumatic. And – to some extent – gets into an argument with her. The article examines the reactions of Bulgarian and Serbian society to the decisions of the Berlin Treaty (1878), which proved traumatic for both sides – regardless of the differences in the status of the one and the other. Th…
Penalties and Doubts. Instead of the Afterword
The text is based on the author's long-standing research in gypsy slums, where those convicted of "preaching religious hatred" and "propaganda for war" targeted Bulgarian "Islamists" live. The harsh sentences handed down by the court of first instance and challenged by the Supreme Court gave rise to numerous doubts. The article anal-yses the reasons for issuing such sentences – too inconclusive and giving the impression of bias. At the time of th…
Transcendence, Transcendent, God in the Philosophy of Philo of Alexandria
The study focuses on the analysis of the problem of the transcendence in the philosophical and theological teaching of Philo of Alexandria. It is noted that in the cosmological teachings of antiquity, the transcendent was understood as a higher sphere, which possessed specific spatio-temporal characteristics, inaccessible for sensory knowledge, but available for speculative cognition. It is emphasized that, unlike Greek thinkers, Philo introduces…
Islam, State and Society in Bulgaria
This article explores stagnation and change in state policies towards the Muslim population in post-Communist Bulgaria. The analysis focuses on the institutional reshuffling of state–mosque relations, as well as hard to change stereotypes and practices. The dynamic and persistent aspects of these relations are placed in the context of complex ethno-religious divisions, legacies of nation-state building, and new trends of Islamic revival. The anal…
