  • Demoting ecocentrism

    Open Access•Frode Skarstein•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2026

Ecocentrism has made an important contribution to environmental ethics by affirming the value of ecosystems, species, and non-human life beyond instrumental human use. In sustainability education, however, its normative status requires closer examination. When ecocentrism is treated as a normatively authoritative framework, philosophical, pedagogical, and democratic problems arise. Claims about intrinsic value remain contested, and their institut…

  • The Mission of Early Childhood Education in the Anthropocene

    Open Access•Lili-Ann Wolff, Tuula H Skarstein et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2020

During the last century, the human way of life has begun to transgress many of the Earth’s biophysical boundaries in an alarming way. The consequences of this are more dramatic and long lasting than ever before. Many researchers even argue that humanity has created a new geological epoch, which they call Anthropocene. Education, even in early childhood (EC), is often presented as a remedy for these complex problems. Yet, how can anyone prepare yo…

  • An Issue of Scale

    Open Access•Frode Skarstein, Lili-Ann Wolff•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2020

The field of geography is important for any sustainability education. The aim of geography education is to enable students to understand the environment, its influence on human activity, and how humans influence the environment. In this article we present a study on how the interplay between the three pillars of sustainability thinking (environment, society and economy) play out on smaller and larger scales of time, space and multitude in geograp…

    Open Access•Tuula H Skarstein, Frode Skarstein•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2020

This study investigates early childhood (EC) student-teachers’ species identification skills and their views on the importance of species knowledge. The study used a mixed methods approach, including a species identification test and a questionnaire, and involved 186 Norwegian EC student-teachers. Our results reveal that species knowledge of first-year students was poor when they entered university. During their first semester, the students learn…

  • Climate beliefs in an oil-dependent economy

    Frode Skarstein•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 3

A large proportion of people in western societies do not believe in the concept of human-induced climate change (HICC), and oil-dependent economies might be expected to have more climate contrarian populations than others. Recent recessions in the Norwegian oil industry caused an influx of dismissed oil engineers into Norwegian science teacher education. With their background in the natural sciences and associations with the oil industry, this gr…
