  • Provenance investigation using Re–Os isotopes and trace element analyses of Hallstatt C–D and La Tène A bipyramidal ingots from the Speyer depot (upper Rhine region, Germany)

I Stepanov, Michael Brauns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

Although bi-pyramidal ingots are the most abundant type of iron ingots from the Hallstatt C–D to La Tène A time in Central Europe, comprising more than 4 tonnes of iron in total, their provenance remains unresolved. This study addresses this question through an integrated approach combining measurement 187 Re/ 188 Os ratios, determined here for the first time in archaeological iron, with 187 Os/ 188 Os of isotope ratios, and trace element analyse…

  • Slag Inclusions in Iron Artifacts from Cemeteries at Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka, and the Metallurgy of the Early Iron Age Itkul Culture

    Dmitry A Artemyev, I Stepanov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals

Dmitry A Artemyev, Maksim N Ankushev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • Exploring the rhenium-osmium isotopic system and metal trace-elements analysis for iron provenance

Silicate slag inclusions in iron artifacts from the Trans-Urals and in iron slags from sites of the Itkul culture were analyzed to assess the geochemical characteristics of iron ore sources exploited during the Early Iron Age. Slag inclusions were found in 19 out of 25 samples from Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka. For comparison, we used 12 iron slag samples from Early Iron Age and medieval sites near Lake Irtysh and from Zotino mine. Via statisti…

  • The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals

    Open Access•Dmitry A Artemyev, Maksim N Ankushev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Trace elements in copper artifacts from Late Bronze and Early Iron Age sites in the Urals, formerly attributed to the metallurgical group of “chemically pure” copper, were analyzed using the method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal of which artifacts included in this group are made reveals geochemical markers suggesting that “pure” copper actually falls into several subgroups. The PCA analysis of the result…

  • Nabataean iron picks for copper mining from Nahal ‘Amram, Israel; Chemical, isotopic and production technology analysis

  • Metallic Ore Resources in the Itkul Culture of the Middle Trans-Urals During the Early Iron Age

    Open Access•Dmitry A Artemyev, I Stepanov et al.•ARTICLE•Ural Historical Journal•2022

The paper addresses the question of ore resources (occurrences and deposits) exploited by the Early Iron Age metallurgists of the Itkul culture in the middle Urals. The main method of the study was the analysis of geological maps and reports, and the analysis of the correlation between the identified ore occurrences and the Itkul culture metal production centers. The results of the study reveal a relationship between the location of the Itkul cul…

  • By the hand of the smelter

    Open Access•I Stepanov, Ivan S Stepanov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 12•References: 32

Slag analyses from archaeological iron smelting sites are common. Rigorous analyses of iron and slag from successful experimental smelting, however, are still rare. Furthermore, thorough analyses from a series of smelts, and of the slag produced in different phases of the smelt, are exceedingly rare. The present study investigates the effect of an iron smelter's decision-making and skills on the products of the smelting process: iron and slag. Fo…

    Lauren Weeks, C M Cable et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 19•References: 53

In this paper, the authors use the site of Saruq al-Hadid – a 'persistent temporary place' located in the mobile dune fields of the north eastern edge of the Rub' al-Khali desert – as a lens to focus discussion on the variable nature of temporary sites and mobile adaptations within the archaeology of southeastern Arabia, the relationships between temporary sites and permanent settlements, and the evidence for collective events and gatherings from…

  • Methodologies for the investigation of corroded iron objects

Open Access•I Stepanov, Lauren Weeks et al.•ARTICLE•STAR Science & Technology of…•2017

Ancient iron objects from early Iron Age archaeological sites are almost always severely corroded, which can severely limit the possibilities for their archaeometallurgical analysis. In this paper, a range of corroded iron objects from different sites and regions of the ancient Near East are investigated with the purpose of developing an integrated scientific approach to the investigation of such materials, outlining the capabilities and major te…
