Neighborhood physical environments and change in cardiometabolic risk factors over 14 years in the study of Women's health across the nation
Does stress from incarceration of family and friends contribute to signs of early vascular ageing in African American women
BACKGROUND: Early vascular ageing (EVA) contributes to elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which disproportionately affects African American women. Incarceration, an event disproportionately impacting African Americans, may be a stressor contributing to EVA in African American women. Further, the subjective perspective, commonly referred to as appraisal, of incarceration may also be important for health. We hypothesised that having fam…

Social Role–Related Stress and Social Role–Related Reward as Related to Subsequent Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease in a Longitudinal Study of Midlife Women
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if midlife social role quality, defined by the stress and rewards associated with four social roles, is related to later-life subclinical cardiovascular disease (SCVD) in a cohort of women transitioning through menopause. METHODS: The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) is a longitudinal cohort study of midlife women. Stress and reward from four social roles (spouse, parent, emplo…
Child Abuse and Neglect and Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease Among Midlife Women
OBJECTIVE: A childhood history of abuse or neglect may be associated with elevated adult cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. No studies have examined associations between child abuse/neglect and subclinical CVD using a validated measure of abuse and neglect. We hypothesized that midlife women with a history of childhood abuse or neglect would have increased subclinical CVD beyond standard CVD risk factors. We tested moderation of associations by s…
Internet Connectivity of State Health Departments
A new era of public health is emerging, with the use of the Internet at the forefront. Improving the efficiency of information transfer through the use of new telecommunications tools, such as the Internet, will lead to advances in health worldwide. To describe the current status of Internet connectivity within the U.S. public health system, state health departments were surveyed by telephone. A total of 47 state health departments participated i…
