Effectiveness of implementing evidence-based approaches to promote physical activity in a Midwestern micropolitan area using a quasi-experimental hybrid type I study design
The study demonstrates that the adapted evidence-based PA interventions in a micropolitan context is effective
The Association Between State Characteristics and Latinx People's Treated Hypertension in Established and New Latinx Destination States
This study sought to quantify the contributions of state-level factors including income inequality, state's legislature political control, and Medicaid expansion in new and established Latinx destination states on Latinx individuals' treated hypertension. Mixed-effects logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 7524 Latinx adults nested within 39 states. Overall, 70% reported b…
Hypertension management among Latinos
Latinos are at an increased risk of hypertension-related disparities. Biological, behavioral, cultural, and structural factors have been identified as underlying mechanisms driving these disparities. However, the influence of Latino settlement patterns on hypertension management practices has been rarely explored, particularly from a qualitative lens. Using data from semi-structured interviews conducted with Latinos with hypertension (n = 26), we…
Identifying the Social Determinants of Treated Hypertension in New and Established Latino Destination States
Extending Work on Rural Health Disparities
We are writing The Journal of Rural Health to draw readers’ attention to the recent study by Matthews and colleagues that appeared in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report1 and offer suggestions to extend their work. We applaud the authors for their focus on rural health—a disparities dimension that is often overlooked—and concur with their assessment that US health surveillance data are rarely disaggregated by meaningful geographic location. Ind…
Active Ottumwa
Background : Evidence-based interventions have been developed and tested to promote physical activity, but fewer studies have focused on identifying effective intervention strategies for mid-size rural communities, especially new immigrant destinations. We report here on the design and implementation of Active Ottumwa, a community-wide intervention using a lay health advisor approach to increase physical activity in a micropolitan new destination…
Calibration of the global physical activity questionnaire to Accelerometry measured physical activity and sedentary behavior
This research demonstrates the utility of calibrating self-report questionnaire data to objective measures to improve estimates of physical activity and sedentary behavior. It provides an understanding of the divide between objective and subjective measures, and provides a means to utilize the two methods as a unified measure
Factors Influencing Diabetes Self-Management Among Medically Underserved Patients With Type II Diabetes
In this study, researchers compare and contrast issues regarding diabetes self-management between persons in good versus poor glycemic control. The sample comprises low-income racially diverse adults with diabetes from four mid-western community health centers; 44 patients participated in eight focus groups divided by control status (HbA1c of > 9 [uncontrolled] or < 7 [controlled]). Themes common to both groups included the impact of dietary rest…
Marriage and parenthood in relation to obesogenic neighborhood trajectories
What about the children? The experience of families involved in an adult-focused diabetes intervention
Objective Among adults with diabetes attempting to change their own diets, we explored how these adults approached providing food for their children and how their children reacted to dietary changes in the household. Design The research design used semi-structured parallel individual interviews of adults and a child (aged 10–17 years) in their home. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, coded and analysed for themes. Subjects Subjects include…
