Promoting online participation in hybrid learning settings
Active participation is a prerequisite for collaborative learning. In hybrid collaboration - where co-located and online participants collaborate on tasks - active participation of online participants is a challenge that may impact collaborative learning. The study aims to gain insights into whether a collaboration script and/or collaborative reflection promote active participation of online participants in hybrid collaborations. n = 88 universit…
Keeping the organization in the loop
The human-centered AI approach posits a future in which the work done by humans and machines will become ever more interactive and integrated. This article takes human-centered AI one step further. It argues that the integration of human and machine intelligence is achievable only if human organizations—not just individual human workers—are kept “in the loop.” We support this argument with evidence of two case studies in the area of predictive ma…
A problem-based approach to the advancement of heuristics for socio-technical evaluation
With ubiquitous, mobile computing, health care systems, and smart factories, socio-technical phenomena continue to emerge that challenge traditional design and evaluation methods. We perceive such phenomena as the intertwinement of technical artifacts and social practices. Previous work shows that there is no sufficient method to evaluate the quality of this socio-technical intertwinement. Hence, our goal was to develop socio-technical heuristics…

Concepts for usable patterns of groupware applications[39] (abstract only)
Patterns, which are based on in-depth practical experience, can be instructing for the design of groupware applications as socio-technical systems. On the basis of a summary of the concept of patterns - as elaborated by the architect Christopher Alexander - its adoptions within computer science are retraced and relationships to the area of groupware are described. General principles for patterns within this domain are formulated and supported by …
