  • Maternal and Infant Health Inequality

Kate Kennedy-Moulton, Sarah Miller et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We use linked administrative data on the universe of California births to provide novel evidence on economic inequality in infant and maternal health. Infants and mothers at the top of the income distribution have worse birth and morbidity outcomes than their lowest-income counterparts, but are nevertheless the least likely to die in the year following birth. Racial disparities swamp these income disparities, with no racial convergence in health …

  • Public Coverage of Postpartum Services for Immigrants

Open Access•Rachel Fabi, Katherine Narvaez Mena et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

The results of this qualitative study suggest that there is substantial variation between states in whether and how immigrants can access publicly funded health insurance during the postpartum period. Further research is needed to examine the association between state policies and postpartum maternal health outcomes

  • Childhood Medicaid Coverage and Later-Life Health Care Utilization

Laura R Wherry, Laura Wherry et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2018

Exploiting a discontinuity in childhood Medicaid eligibility based on date of birth, we find that more years of childhood eligibility are associated with fewer hospitalizations in adulthood. For blacks, we find a 7% to 15% decrease in hospitalizations and a suggestive 2% to 5% decrease in emergency department visits, but no similar effect for nonblacks. The effects are pronounced for utilization related to chronic illnesses and for patients livin…

  • Health and Access to Care during the First 2 Years of the ACA Medicaid Expansions

Sarah Miller, Laura R Wherry et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•2017

BACKGROUND: By September 2015, a total of 29 states and Washington, D.C., were participating in Medicaid expansions under the Affordable Care Act. We examined whether Medicaid expansions were associated with changes in insurance coverage, health care use, and health among low-income adults. METHODS: We compared changes in outcomes during the 2 years after implementation of the Medicaid expansion (2014 and 2015) relative to the 4 years before expa…

  • Early Coverage, Access, Utilization, and Health Effects Associated With the Affordable Care Act Medicaid Expansions

Open Access•Laura R Wherry, Laura Wherry et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Internal Medicine•2016

BACKGROUND: In 2014, only 26 states and the District of Columbia chose to implement the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansions for low-income adults. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the state Medicaid expansions were associated with changes in insurance coverage, access to and utilization of health care, and self-reported health. DESIGN: Comparison of outcomes before and after the expansions in states that did and did…

  • Medicaid Family Planning Expansions and Related Preventive Care

    Laura R Wherry, Laura Wherry•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 2

I examined the impact of state expansions in eligibility for Medicaid family planning services on the utilization of Papanicolaou (Pap) tests, clinical breast examinations, HIV testing, and routine doctor check-ups among women aged 21 to 44 years using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (1993–2009). Using a natural experiment approach, I found significant increases in Pap tests and clinical breast examinations among women eligible for…

  • Gender Differences in Vocational School Training and Earnings Premiums in Taiwan

Yana Van Der Meulen Rodgers, Joseph E Zveglich et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2006•References: 6

International capital mobility and economic restructuring have brought training and skills acquisition to the forefront of policy dialogues. Taiwan has gone beyond most countries in promoting vocational education and setting strict quotas for schooling. Although the education plans do not have separate targets for men and women, they have gendered outcomes. Estimates of earnings premiums using ordinary least squares and quantile regression techni…
