The distributional and spillover impacts of tourism across regions
This paper examines in detail the spillover impacts of tourism on regional poverty, income inequality and inter-regional disparities within an integrated framework. Our novel approach integrates regional TSA and household micro-data within a regional computable general equilibrium model. The findings reveal that while the impacts of tourism expansion are positive at the national level, poverty in some regions can be exacerbated due to the spillov…
The use of ICTs and income distribution in Brazil
This study explores the complex relationship between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and socioeconomic characteristics. We employ a cutting-edge explainable machine learning approach, known as SHAP values, to interpret an XGBoost and neural network model, as well as benchmark traditional econometric methods. The application of machine learning algorithms combined with the SHAP methodology reveals complex nonlinear relationships …
The impact of digital inequality in achieving sustainable development
Purpose Digital inequality is considered one of the leading causes of socioeconomic disparities nowadays and a barrier to sustainable development. However, a dearth of empirical research has examined the impact of digital inequality in attaining sustainable development. This study aims to systematically review the scientific publications on the impact of digital inequality in achieving sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach The pref…
Political relations and bilateral tourism demand
Political relations between countries can potentially affect and be affected by bilateral visitor flows. Applying various modified Granger causality tests, this article uses Japan and China as a case study of the possible bi‐directional linkages between tourism demand and political relations. Findings suggest that country relations do influence visitor flows, but not vice versa. The influence is statistically strong regarding visitor flows from C…
Investigating SME’s credit constraints
This study aims to provide an understanding of factors that might affect three-level credit constraints of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam, using data from the Vietnam’s Manufacturing SME Survey database. We apply a random-effects generalised ordered probit model to accommodate two types of heterogeneity: unobserved individual heterogeneity and the heterogeneous effect of independent variables across three constraint categori…
Covid-19 impacts of inbound tourism on Australian economy
SME credit constraints and access to informal credit markets in Vietnam
Purpose A review of literature has documented that accessing formal credit and other banking services has always been a crucial challenge for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The alternative, therefore, tends to be informal channels. However, the credit constraint vis-à-vis informal channel link does not appear to be well documented in the literature. This study aims to investigate whether credit constraints significantly affect the pro…
