Healthcare innovation adoption in Africa
OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that healthcare innovation adoption is complex. Using Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), an innovation for malaria prevention, the study aimed to understand factors considered in the adoption of healthcare innovations in Africa. METHODS AND MEASURES: Using qualitative methods, we interviewed 10 household heads in Ghana who had freely received LLINs during a malaria campaign. We analyzed our data using a deductiv…
An Examination of African Immigrants With Overweight or Obesity
African immigrants in the US are highly affected by obesity and obesity-related health conditions, possibly due to the obesogenic food environment and sedentary lifestyle. We aimed to understand the weight, lifestyle behaviors, and body image perceptions of African immigrants. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 70 (67% female) African immigrants with overweight or obesity [mean age 40.69 (SD = 10.26), BMI = 31.41 kg/m2 (SD = 3.95)]. Data we…
Understanding barriers and facilitators of healthy diet and physical activity among African immigrants in the US
African immigrants share similar barriers and facilitators to healthy diet and physical activity as others but also have unique barriers and facilitators that need to be addressed in tailored lifestyle interventions. Incorporating these in future lifestyle interventions may enhance relevance, engagement, and more sustainable behavior change
Food Swamps and Transportation Access
The study examined the relationship between food swamps and self-reported food shopping frequency and perceived food access, while considering transportation mode and travel time. This Community-Based Participatory Research study surveyed residents from six neighborhoods in Hartford. Individual-level food swamp exposure (the ratio of unhealthy to healthy food stores within a 0.5-mile radius of participants' homes) was measured both objectively (u…
Prevalence and Predictors of Posting Health-Related Content Among US Facebook Users
Health-related content is prevalent on Facebook, but we know little about how often the typical user posts about health, the nature of such posts, or the characteristics of users who do so. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 2508 adult US Facebook users to assess the frequency and predictors of posting about a health condition, health behavior, and health information on Facebook. The findings revealed that 68.7% of participants posted at le…
HIV status disclosure and sexual activity among pregnant women in Ghana
Human Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status disclosure to sexual partners is associated with prevention, care, treatment, and support for pregnant women with HIV. We aimed to assess HIV status disclosure and sexual activity among pregnant women with HIV. We conducted a cross-sectional hospital-based survey using quantitative methods. Data were collected from 118 pregnant women with HIV enrolled in the prevention of mother-to-child transmissio…
