Qualitative Analysis of Barriers and Facilitators to Tobacco Treatment Engagement Among Hispanic Patients with Cancer in New York City
Hispanic patients with cancer who smoke are less likely to quit after diagnosis and underutilize evidence-based tobacco treatment. Understanding the complex factors influencing their engagement is crucial for developing effective and tailored interventions. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 12 adult patients with cancer who self-identified as Hispanic or Latino referred between June 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, to a tobacco…
Investigation of Psychometric Properties and Correlation with Psychological Distress after Hurricane Hazards in Puerto Rico
The HHI is a valid and reliable tool for assessing mental health impact in cancer survivors after hurricanes. Association between Hispanic Ethnicity and Greater Expectation of Benefit from Acupuncture or Massage for Pain in Cancer
Importance of Communication Skills Training and Meaning Centered Psychotherapy Concepts among Patients and Caregivers Coping with Advanced Cancer
Latinos are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced cancer and have specific existential and communication needs. Concepts within Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy (MCP) interventions and Communications Skills Training (CST) assist patients in attending to these needs. However, Latino-tailored MCP interventions have yet to be adapted for advanced cancer patients and caregivers. A cross-sectional survey was administered to Latino advanced cancer pa…

Latino patients and caregivers coping with advanced cancer were asked to list important end-of-life topics to culturally inform a psychosocial intervention adaptation process. A qualitative study was conducted, and semi-structured interviews were perfo…

The Effects of Race and Racial Concordance on Patient-Physician Communication
Despite mixed results due to measurement heterogeneity, results of the present review highlight the importance of training physicians and patients to engage in higher quality communication with black and racially discordant patients by focusing on improving patient-centeredness, information-giving, partnership building, and patient engagement in communication processes
Missed Opportunity
Association of socioeconomic and practical unmet needs with self-reported nonadherence to cancer treatment appointments in low-income Latino and Black cancer patients
Among ethnic minority cancer patients, unmet socioeconomic and supportive care needs, housing needs in particular, predicted patient-reported missed radiation, and/or chemotherapy appointments. Future research should focus on exploring the impact of practical and supportive unmet needs on adherence and development of interventions aiming to improve cancer treatment adherence
