Variability of Fish Assemblages throughout the Holocene in Northern Chile (18–31°S)
Our study provides a synthesis and assessment of the ichthyoarchaeological record for pre-Columbian human occupations during the Holocene (ca. 12,000 BP – 1492 AD) on the coast of northern Chile (18-31°S), on the Pacific coast of South America. We focus on the variability of fish assemblages, using data obtained from publications between 1979 and 2023. We standardise and compare ichthyoarchaeological data, applying qualitative and quantitative in…

Big Fish or Small Fish? Differential Ichthyoarchaeological Representation Revealed by Different Recovery Methods in the Atacama Desert Coast, Northern Chile
Recovery methods and techniques for archaeological sampling can yield major differences in abundance and anatomo-taxonomical representation of animals, affecting past social and ecological reconstruction. Despite being a common organic material in archaeological sites, faunal remains typically exhibit differential preservation of species and skeletal elements due to pre- and post-depositional processes. This is particularly true for small-sized a…
Fishing during the early human occupations of the Atacama Desert coast
The Atacama Desert coast (18-30° S) presents one of the earliest chronologies in the South America region, whose first occupations date from ~ 13,000 cal BP. Since that time, coastal and marine resources have been a common component at sites along the littoral zone. Fish species have been particularly important, as have the fishing technologies developed and used by the coastal communities. However, even though several archaeological sites have b…

From the use of space to territorialisation during the Early Holocene in Taltal, coastal Atacama Desert, Chile
Billfish foraging along the northern coast of Chile during the Middle Holocene (7400–5900 cal BP)
Maritime fishing during the Middle Holocene in the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert
Subsistence Continuity Linked to Consumption of Marine Protein in the Formative Period in the Interfluvic Coast of Northern Chile
From material culture evidence dating as early as 7500 cal BC, it has been established that populations from the interfluvic coast in northern Chile adapted to a maritime economic livelihood. During the 2nd millennium BC, local populations began to experience major social changes arising mainly from an increase in contacts with agropastoral populations from the highlands of the Andes. New radiocarbon data and stable isotope (δ 15 N col , δ 13 C c…
