Two-Year Longitudinal Motor Performance of Very Preterm and/or Very-Low-Birth-Weight Infants in Suriname
Background/Objectives: Follow-up studies in very preterm infants are common, but fewer studies are situated in low- or middle-income countries. In a prospective cohort study, we explored longitudinal motor performance trajectories and influencing factors, including an early motor intervention program. Very preterm infants (gestational age Methods: We assessed 149 (49.7% boys) infants (mean gestational age 29 +6 , mean birth weight 1271 g) at 3, 1…
Core outcome sets for trials of interventions to prevent and to treat multimorbidity in adults in low and middle-income countries: The Cosmos study
INTRODUCTION: The burden of multimorbidity is recognised increasingly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), creating a strong emphasis on the need for effective evidence-based interventions. Core outcome sets (COS) appropriate for the study of multimorbidity in LMICs do not presently exist. These are required to standardise reporting and contribute to a consistent and cohesive evidence-base to inform policy and practice. We describe the de…
Prevalence of persistent symptoms after having Covid-19 in a cohort in Suriname
Objectives. To determine the prevalence of persistent symptoms after having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a cohort in Suriname, and assess the factors associated with long COVID. Methods. A sample of adults 18 years and older who were registered 3–4 months previously in a national database because of a positive COVID-19 test were selected. They were interviewed about socioeconomic characteristics, pre-COVID-19 health status and lifestyle…
Measurement of physical activity and sedentary behavior in national health surveys, South America
Objectives. To characterize how physical activity and sedentary behavior have been measured in national health surveys in South American countries. Methods. An extensive search was made for national health surveys from all 12 South American countries through health websites, national statistical offices, and contact with researchers and policy-makers. The following eligibility criteria were used to select surveys: conducted in a South American co…
Assessing the feasibility of the Healthy Life in Suriname Study: Using advanced hemodynamics to evaluate cardiovascular risk
Objectives. To determine the feasibility of assessing population cardiovascular risk with advanced hemodynamics in the Healthy Life in Suriname (HELISUR) study. Methods. This was a preliminary study conducted in May – June 2012 using the Technical-Economic-Legal-Operational-Scheduling (TELOS) method to assess the feasibility of the HELISUR—a large-scale, cross-sectional population study of cardiovascular risk factors and disease in Suriname. Suri…
Physical activity and obesity: Is there a difference in association between the Asian- and African- Surinamese adult population
Meeting PA recommendations, particularly within the commuting and leisure time domains, is associated with lower obesity prevalence in the total population. Among the African-Surinamese population, PA within the leisure time domain, more active minutes/week and higher levels of total volume are associated with a lower obesity prevalence. This is not found in the Asian-Surinamese population
Self-reported physical activity behavior of a multi-ethnic adult population within the urban and rural setting in Suriname
Around half of the population meets the recommended PA level. Future lifestyle interventions aiming at increasing PA should especially focus on women and older individuals as they are less likely to meet the recommended levels of PA
