Women from Sub-Saharan Africa had more than two times the risk of emergency CS compared to women originating from Norway, regardless of pre-pregnancy BMI
Newly Arrived Migrant Women’s Experience of Maternity Health Information: A Face-to-Face Questionnaire Study in Norway
Limited understanding of health information may contribute to an increased risk of adverse maternal outcomes among migrant women. We explored factors associated with migrant women's understanding of the information provided by maternity staff, and determined which maternal health topics the women had received insufficient coverage of. We included 401 newly migrated women (≤5 years) who gave birth in Oslo, excluding migrants born in high-income co…
Birthweight of babies born to migrant mothers - What role do integration policies play
Birthweights of babies born to migrant women are generally lower than those of babies born to native-born women. Favourable integration policies may improve migrants' living conditions and contribute to higher birthweights. We aimed to explore associations between integration policies, captured by the Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX), with offspring birthweight among migrants from various world regions. In this cross-country study we pool…

Maternal deaths in rural Gambia
The objective of this study was to determine causes and contributing factors to maternal deaths in a poor rural setting. We included all maternal deaths (N =42), identified from January to September 2002, in a remote area of The Gambia. To gain a comprehensive picture of medical causes and contributing factors a combination of audit procedure and verbal autopsy was applied. The results showed that anaemia (n =12) was the leading cause of death fo…

This study indicates that health personnel delivering antenatal care to women of Pakistani origin need to be watchful for the following conditions: gestational diabetes, hyperemesis gravidarum, early diagnosis of the type of anaemia, fetal malformations and infections like hepatitis and tuberculosis. In addition, a correct diagnosis of intrauterine growth retardation is important. Among ethnic Norwegian women pelvic girdle pain and exhaustion wer…
Ethnicity and use of obstetrical analgesia: Do Pakistani women receive inadequate pain relief in labour
Women of Pakistani origin were more than three times as likely not to receive analgesia in labour as Norwegian women. The health services offered to Pakistani women in labour were different from those offered to Norwegian women. These results indicate that women of Pakistani origin may be offered insufficient obstetrical analgesia, or that Norwegian women received unnecessary pain relief in labour
