  • Active surveillance and trajectories of decision-making among patients with low-risk prostate cancer

Open Access•Alice Guan, Valerie McGuire et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Dynamics•2026

Objectives Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. This study examines factors associated with active surveillance (AS) uptake, timing of treatment decision making, and whether timing affects quality of life. Methods We used data from a population-based observational study of 512 patients aged 40–79 diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer from 2016 to 2022. Factors associated with AS receipt and treatment decisio…

  • Socio-economic position, area-level deprivation and gradients in cancer incidence

Open Access•Robert A Hiatt, Wei Xun et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

The findings demonstrate the importance of socioeconomic position in the incidence of some common cancers prior to diagnosis and treatment and reinforces the need for further research to address the contribution of upstream social determinants in the etiology of cancer

Purpose: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals in the United States are at increased risk of cancer compared to the non-SGM population. Understanding how SGM persons perceive cancer risk and their practices and preferences for accessing health information is key for improving the preventive and health care services they receive. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from the San Francisco Health Information National Tren…

  • Socioeconomic status and colorectal cancer screening behaviors in a vulnerable multiethnic population

    Eduardo J Santiago-Rodríguez, Natalie A Rivadeneira et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2020

Participants with lower SES characteristics were less likely to adhere to CRC screening guidelines and being retired was a predictor of compliance. There was evidence of heterogeneity in associations between SES and CRC screening by race/ethnicity. Life circumstances of retired people could provide insights for designing interventions aimed to improve CRC screening uptake in these priority groups. Future efforts should consider mechanisms underly…

  • Profile of HIV-Infected Hispanics with Pancytopenia

    Open Access•Eduardo J Santiago-Rodríguez, Eduardo Santiago-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015

Pancytopenia is seen in late HIV infection; it is associated with medical complications and with decreased survival. We determined the prevalence of pancytopenia at baseline in a cohort of HIV-positive Hispanics living in Puerto Rico, and compared their socio-demographic, immunological and clinical characteristics. A total of 1202 patients enrolled between 2000 and 2010 were included. They were grouped according to pancytopenia status, defined by…
