Use of a Novel Theory-Based Pragmatic Tool to Evaluate the Quality of Instructor-Led Exercise Videos to Promote Youth Physical Activity at Home
Understanding the use of a pragmatic tool is a first step in the evaluation of InPACT at Home exercise videos. Our preliminary findings suggest that the InPACT at Home videos had low cognitive load. If future research confirms our findings, using a more rigorous study design, then developing a collection of instructor-led exercise videos that induce low cognitive load may help to enhance youth physical activity participation in the home environme…
The Feasibility and Challenges of Conducting Online Research to Examine Movement Behavior in Parents and Children During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The global pandemic of COVID-19 shifted the methodology of this research project. The purpose of this perspective article is to discuss the feasibility and challenges of converting an in-person mixed methods study that examined associations among and beliefs about physical activity, motor competence, and perceived competence to an online format with parents and children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recruitment was conducted through a University …
Variation and Predictors of Gross Motor Coordination Development in Azorean Children
We investigated the development of gross motor coordination (GMC) as well as its predictors in school-aged Azorean children. The sample included 181 children (90 girls), followed consecutively for 4 years from 6 to 9 years of age. GMC was assessed with the Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder, and predictors included body mass index, standing long jump, 50-yard dash, and shuttle run. The changes in GMC and the effects of predictors were analyzed wi…
Structured Observations of Child Behaviors during a Mastery-Motivational Climate Motor Skill Intervention
These findings support that children engage in mastery-motivation climates, but the amount of participation may be influenced by individual factors of sex and initial skill level
Protocol for a multicenter-cluster randomized clinical trial of a motor skills intervention to promote physical activity and health in children
Ethical approval was obtained through the Health Sciences and Behavioral Sciences IRB, University of Michigan (HUM00208311). The CHAMP-ASP study is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Findings will be disseminated via print, online media, dissemination events, and practitioner and/or research journals
Perceived Physical Competence Predicts Gains in Children’s Locomotor but Not Ball Skills across an Intervention
The purpose of this pre/post experimental study was to examine if children's perceived physical competence predicted changes in motor skills across an intervention. Sixty-seven children (Mage = 53.2 ± 3.7 months) participated in a 16-week, mastery-climate motor skill intervention. Perceived physical competence was assessed before the intervention using the physical competence subscale of the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acce…

Practical Theology in Scotland
In this article I will argue that disinheritance is a key theme in understanding the field of Practical Theology in the academy. To do this, I will talk about the way that the disinherited status is often placed upon Practical Theologians in the wider theological discipline. I will discuss the means by which Practical Theologians break boundaries in theological study by embracing their disinherited status as well as engaging with those who are di…

Relationship Between Fundamental Motor Skill Competence and Physical Activity During Childhood and Adolescence
The purpose of this review is to synthesize the evidence of the relationship between fundamental motor skills (FMS) competence and physical activity by qualitatively describing results from 13 studies that met rigorous inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria: (a) published in a peer-review journal, (b) participants were between the ages of 3–18, (c) participants were typically developing, (d) FMS was measured by a process-oriented assessment, (e) …
Motor Competence and its Effect on Positive Developmental Trajectories of Health
The influence of instructional climates on time spent in management tasks and physical activity of 2nd-grade students during physical education
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of two physical education (PE) instructional climates (mastery, performance) on the percentage of time students spent in a) moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and b) management tasks during PE in 2nd-grade students. Forty-eight 2nd graders (mastery, n = 23; performance, n = 25) participated in a daily, school-based five-week PE intervention. All students also participated in typical …
Exploring preschoolers’ engagement and perceived physical competence in an autonomy-based object control skill intervention
The purpose of this study was to describe children’s engagement during two (high and low) autonomy-based climates. Twenty-five preschool children participated in a nine-week object control skill intervention. Children completed the object control subscale of the Test of Gross Motor Development 2nd Edition and the perceived physical competence subscale of Harter and Pike’s Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance (1984). Skill…
Getting the fundamentals of movement
The development of fundamental movement skills (FMS) is associated with positive health‐related outcomes. Children do not develop FMS naturally through maturational processes. These skills need to be learned, practised and reinforced. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of motor skill interventions in children. The following databases were searched for relevant articles: Academic Search Premier, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, SportDiscus an…
