  • Colonial Czechoslovakia? Overseas and Internal Colonization in the Interwar Czechoslovak Republic

    Filip Herza•ARTICLE•Interventions•2024

This essay contributes to the recent discussions on the history of marginal-colonial cultures situated on the fringes of the Empire. Focusing on interwar Czechoslovakia, the essay discusses how to productively think about the coloniality of this land-locked country. In particular, it looks at the entanglements and reverberations between the overseas colonial ambitions and projects of internal colonization in the eastern part of the republic, name…

  • Colonial Exceptionalism: Post-colonial Scholarship and Race in Czech and Slovak Historiography

    Open Access•Filip Herza•ARTICLE•Slovenský národopis•2020

In spite of recent calls for the decolonisation of Czech and Slovak academia, there is still relatively little reflection of post-colonial theory in either Czech or Slovak historiography or related disciplines, including ethnology and Slavic studies. In the following essay I summarise the local discussion of coloniality and colonialism that has been going on since at least the end of the 2000s, while pointing out its conceptual limits and blind s…

  • Sombre faces: Race and nation-building in the institutionalization of Czech physical anthropology (1890s-1920s)

    Filip Herza•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 22

This paper examines the complex relationship between nation building and science of race by tracing the development of Czech physical anthropology before and after WWI. I am particularly interested in the shifting epistemologies of race as part of the political economy of knowledge and its transformations in the changing historical circumstances marked by nationalism. My argument pinpoints the ambivalence of racial theory, employed by Czech physi…

  • Anthropologists and Their Monsters

    Filip Herza•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article traces the emergence of the discipline of physical anthropology in the Czech lands and its first public presentation at the Czechoslavic Ethnographic Exhibition held in 1895 in Prague. The search for the physical characteristics of Czechs involved a large-scale anthropometric survey in Czech schools and among the adult population from 1893 to 1895, which was subsequently presented at this exhibition. This article focuses on the produ…

  • Singer’s Midgets v karlínském divadle Theatre Varieté: Strategie reprezentace tělesné odlišnosti v Praze 20. let 20. století

    Open Access•Filip Herza•ARTICLE•Dějiny - teorie - kritika•2011

Pražské vystoupení tzv. „liliputánského“ souboru Singer's Midgets představovalo ve své době mimořádně působivou manifestaci středostavovských hodnot a dobových představ o tělesné ab/normalitě. Studie analyzuje reprezentační strategie, rétorické figury a diskursy, které spoluutvářely vystoupení Singer's Midgets v Praze roku 1928 i jejich reflexi ve veřejném prostoru. Cílem studie je ukázat, jak se utvářely vztahy mezi „odlišnými“ těly a jejich pub…
