  • Across the Divide

    Open Access•David Lunn•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This article investigates some of the institutional and poetic practices around the idea of Hindustani in the period 1900-47. It charts the establishment of the Hindustani Academy in 1927 and explores some of its publishing activities as it attempted to make a positive institutional intervention in the Hindi-Urdu debate and cultural field more broadly. It then considers some aspects of poetic production in literary journals, including those assoc…

  • ‘One story ends and another begins’

David Lunn, Julia Byl•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2017

This is the first treatment of a hitherto unknown text, a hybrid lithograph-manuscript from 1864 called the Syair Tabut, or ‘Poem of the tomb effigies’, by Encik Ali. The only known copy of the Syair, held at Leiden University in the Klinkert collection, and transcribed and translated by Byl, Iskandar, Lunn, and McCallum (2017), describes the Muharram commemorations at Singapore that year. As the poet describes the procession and its consequences…

  • The Syair Tabut of Encik Ali

Julia Byl, Raja Iskandar Bin Raja Halid et al.•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2017

This is an annotated transcription and translation of the Syair Tabut (Poem of the Tomb Effigies) of Encik Ali, a Malay-language, Jawi-script syair account of the Muharram commemorations of 1864 at Singapore. The only known part lithograph and part manuscript of this text, on which this edition is based, is held in the library of Leiden University, shelfmark Kl. 191. For a full discussion of this Syair, see the accompanying article by Lunn and By…

  • The Accuracy of Age-specific Population Estimates for Small Areas in Britain

David Lunn, David J Lunn et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1998•Cited by: 6

Population estimates play an important role in the allocation of resources at many levels of government and commerce but little is known about the accuracy of age-specific population estimates. Such knowledge is crucial, as resource allocation is often targeted at populations of particular age, and decisions need to be based on the reliability of the estimates. This paper presents a multi-level statistical analysis of the accuracy of age-specific…

  • Small-area population estimates

Open Access•Stephen Simpson, Liz Middleton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997

"Population estimates are usually produced by local government administrations in Britain, for each small area within their authority. Increasing interest has been shown by commerce and by central government. Five main methods are identified: apportionment, ratio change, additive change, cohort survival, and local censuses. Estimation strategies also vary according to available data, the detail in which a population is estimated, and the precise …

  • The English Cassinese (1611-50)

    Open Access•David Lunn•ARTICLE•Recusant History•1975

The Englishmen who were members of the Italian or Cassinese Benedictine Congregation in the seventeenth century have been neglected, mainly because, unlike the Englishmen who joined Spanish monasteries, the Cassinese did not perpetuate themselves and thus did not produce historians who would keeptheir memory alive. This is a pity, since several of them are important figures: Robert Gregory Sayer (1560-1602), who gained an international reputation…

  • Augustine Baker (1575–1641) and the English Mystical Tradition

    Open Access•David Lunn•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1975

The importance of Augustine Baker in the history of English devotional literature has long been recognised, but there has always been a major handicap to any proper understanding of him—the fact that most of his works have not been published, except in a onevolume digest, entitled Sancta Sophia , which one of his disciples, Serenus Cressy, produced in 1657. Thus Baker has recently been the subject of a full-scale monograph, which, though otherwis…
