Immersion and Expanded Spectatorships
The special section “Immersion and expanded spectatorships” discusses how moving images have been intensely reinvented in recent virtual environments, promoting renewed forms of viewing that change and broaden the spectator’s experience. Engaging with the fact that the history of immersive media is often difficult to reconstruct and categorize clearly, the four essays here gathered reflect precisely such plurality of research lines. Simultaneousl…

The Art of Collecting [exposição]
Exposição The Art of Collecting, 2018, M–Museum Leuven, Bélgica© Susana S. MartinsO conceito de “coleccionar” é tão vasto, antigo e complexo que poderia, facilmente, ocupar muitos e inesgotáveis museus. Não é isso que acontece na cidade de Lovaina, onde a exposição The Art of Collecting (Verzameling is een Kunst) se desdobra espantosamente apenas numa pequena ala do M–Museum Leuven (daqui em diante M–Museum). Felizmente, a amplitude espacial e fí…
Circulating pictures
This article examines the interplay between photography and universal exhibitions, two modern phenomena which, in different ways, have allowed for the world to be seen and reconfigured in unprecedented ways. It considers world exhibitions not just as sites of movement but also as systems that crucially rely on the circulation of photographic images. Focusing on a specific, and so far unexamined, case study – the Pavilion of Portugal at Brussels E…
Photography as Anti-Museum? Conflicting museological concepts in the work of Joachim Schmid
When, in 1990, artist Joachim Schmid mobilized people who wanted to get rid of unwanted pictures to send them to the Institute for the Reprocessing of Used Photographs, an “official” institution responsible for gathering the First General Collection of Used Photographs, he was clearly overcoming the simple role of the “artist as curator” to assume another museum function as part of his artistic statement. Addressing the relationship between museu…
Revising the Future in The Female Man
In its deployment of both utopian and dystopian narratives, Joanna Russ’s 1975 novel, The Female Man, avoids the familiar traps of determinism embedded in narratives of inevitable progress or decline; instead, it affords its characters the technological ability to move laterally through time, to encounter alternate versions of themselves and their worlds. In its depiction of technology, the novel emphasizes mediations and interdependencies betwee…
"Gender Trouble and Lesbian Desire in Djuna Barnes's "Nightwood
Djuna Barnes has always been a troublemaker. Or, to be more precise, her public persona and artistic output have proved troublesome on a number of levels. As a friend or acquaintance, Barnes could be hard to get along with; those who knew Barnes admired her wit, intelligence, and forceful character but occasionally winced at the harshness of her judgments. She was not afraid, it would seem, to say exactly what she thought on almost any topic. As …
