Moving Target
This article considers the symbol of the Royal Air Force (RAF) roundel as the current emblem of British pop music, as adopted by the British Music Experience, a branded heritage visitor center. The article works backwards through denotations and connotations of the roundel, identifying where meanings and associations have been picked up (or abandoned) through time. The roundel and its resilient meaningfulness are tracked through various regimes o…

Counter-realities and conflicted place
This article celebrates and critically examines Gee Vaucher’s artwork for the Crass album The Feeding of the Five Thousand (1978), drawing upon the enduring fascination that the work retains. Vaucher’s work is complex, disconcerting and mesmeric, and my intention is to pin down the facets of the work that achieve these qualities. The work sits in a tradition of collage and montage taken up in British punk and post-punk scenes, and I examine a sel…

Digital-alchemical morphology
This paper examines a hybrid mix of visual and spatial illusions commonly articulated on the British travelling funfair. The paper responds to, and extends, Stephen Walker’s 2018 book The Fair-Line and Good Frontage which presents a study of the fairground premised on the construction of illusion. Taking as a case study the long-standing funfair at King’s Lynn, Norfolk, I use archival research, observation and interview to examine the visual meth…
Heavy metal, rolling fields and the infinite harvest
This paper focuses on the British steam rally – an increasingly vast and rurally situated vernacular gathering of preserved and restored agricultural and industrial machinery alongside re-enacted craft practices and battles, refreshments, entertainments and markets trading in craft, heritage bric-a-bric and jumble. The steam rally has a growing presence and popularity, whilst at the same time, it has evaded the critical purview of the academy and…
Anything off the bottom shelf
Travelling fairgrounds embody the ephemeral. They arrive from elsewhere to occupy an everyday space, momentarily wrenching it from regular purpose and bringing in a bombardment of shimmering surfaces, magical spaces, affects, illusions, fleeting peaks of sensory excess. Utilizing historical resources, interviews with showpeople and gathered testimony, this article examines the material encounter of the British fairground through the prize, what m…
Contemporary Photographic Practices on the British Fairground
The fairground is a somewhat magical and uncharted realm of illusion, deception, thrill and adventure. It offers a glimpse of the improbable and impossible, and a taste or touch of the unattainable. This article looks at the crossover of photography and the British fairground following the gradual take-up of photography in the post-war period. It briefly covers early traditions concomitant with the specialised practice of photography, then it ide…
Collision, Collusion and Coincidence
This article looks at parallel methods, motivations and modes of consumption between formative British pop art and British fairground art. I focus on two strands, the emergent critical work of the Independent Group and the school of artists based at the Royal College of Art under the nominal leadership of Peter Blake. I use iconographical and iconological methods to compare the content of the art, and then examine how pop art tried to create both…
