  • Physical education across international media (2018−2024)

Open Access•Brendon Hyndman, Vaughan Cruickshank et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

  • The preparation priorities and challenges faced by teachers in Australian secondary schools before outdoor education programs

Open Access•Ashley Cripps, Brock Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adventure Education…•2026

Outdoor education promotes various socio-emotional, physical, and educational benefits. Preparation for these experiences must account for the curriculum, participants, environment, and logistics. The scale of such undertakings is reportedly prohibitive, yet there is minimal empirical evidence on teachers’ preparation practices. In this study, we aimed to describe the preparatory priorities and challenges experienced by Australian outdoor educati…

  • Just breathe! The impact of a slow-paced breathing intervention for teachers

Open Access•Tony Carroll, Ben Piggott et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching and Teacher Education•2026

The teaching profession globally is experiencing unprecedented levels of occupational distress, contributing to high rates of attrition, health problems, and reduced student outcomes. This study examined the effects of slow-paced breathing (SPB) at a rate of 6 breaths per minute, for 10 min daily across an eight-week period. Seventy six full-time teachers were randomly allocated to an intervention or control group, with psychological and physiolo…

  • Multi-sensory information and simulator immersion

    Open Access•Zachariah G Hoyne, Khaya Morris-Binelli et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2026

Immersive technologies such as 360-degree video virtual reality (360VR) provide unique opportunities to simulate representative environments to investigate decision-making in a safe and cost-effective manner. Inclusion of multi-sensory visual, contextual, and auditory information is important to enhance simulator psychological fidelity. Yet, the influence of increased sensory information on decision-making, presence, and cognitive load in 360VR c…

  • Influence of simulator physical fidelity and immersion on decision-making skill, presence, and cognitive load

    Open Access•Zachariah G Hoyne, Khaya Morris-Binelli et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2026

In a variety of domains such as law enforcement and sport, virtual reality is being explored to simulate field-based decision-making contexts. 360-degree video virtual reality (360VR) is innovative as it can immerse the user in a simulated environment, present egocentric, stereoscopic vision and allows for head movements to perceive visual information. However, it is unknown whether physical, rather than psychological fidelity, is crucial for per…

  • “I love being in the outdoors”

    Open Access•Michael J A Down, Duncan Picknoll et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2023

BACKGROUND: This qualitative descriptive study gauged the perceptions of adolescent focus group participants and outdoor adventure education teachers on their preferred program components to improve adolescent wellbeing during a secondary school outdoor adventure education program. METHODS: Five student focus groups (N = 29) and four key informant interviews were conducted. Manual clustering of transcripts and template thematic analysis involving…

  • Life in a time of Covid

Open Access•Ben Piggott, Paola Chivers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Lockdown was associated with lower physical activity, higher non-work-related screen time and more sitting time compared to post lockdown which also reported higher body mass index. Lower levels of mental well-being were associated with lower physical activity levels during lockdown. Given the known positive affect of physical activity on mental well-being and obesity, and the detrimental associations shown in this study, a key public health mess…

  • Life in a time of Covid

Open Access•Ranila Bhoyroo, Paola Chivers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

While advice on infection control measures were appropriately provided, there is a need for concurrent health promotional information to help combat the changes in physical, mental and psychosocial well-being observed during quarantine to prevent negative health consequences in the community even if there are minimal effects of the pandemic itself

  • Interdisciplinary Sport Research Can Better Predict Competition Performance, Identify Individual Differences, and Quantify Task Representation

Open Access•Ben Piggott, Sean Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2020•References: 1

Sport performance consists of interacting individual, task and environmental constraints, but research has used a monodisciplinary, rather than an interdisciplinary approach to understand performance. This study used Australian football (AF) as the exemplar sport to investigate the value of an interdisciplinary approach to understand sport performance. Through this, it was also possible to quantify individual differences and representative task d…

  • Inclusion illusion

Tahlia McCracken, Sian Chapman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•References: 4

For preservice teachers, inclusive education practices are daunting, highlighting concerns around confidence, individualisation, and student behaviour. To explore this issue further, this study examined the perceptions of preservice Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers on inclusion using a sequential, explanatory mixed-methods research design. Preservice HPE teachers (n = 44) completed a compulsory course on inclusion and a 10-week school…
