Capitalization of social service nonprofit activities
Non-profit service providers often face local opposition due to dispersed social benefits, but concentrated costs. Using nationwide U.S. data, we find opening a non-profit homeless service provider is capitalized into home values in the surrounding zip code, increasing values by 1.2%, using a difference-in-differences design, comparing zip codes that open their first provider to neighbouring zip codes without one. The relationship is even stronge…

Our findings indicate that the decision to quit smoking is significantly influenced by individuals' attitudes toward smoking. Reasons for Initiation and Regular Use of Heated Tobacco Products among Current and Former Smokers in South Korea
South Korea is the world’s second-largest heated tobacco product (HTP) market after Japan. HTP sales in South Korea have increased rapidly since May 2017, accounting for 10.6% of the total tobacco market in 2020. Despite this, little is known as to why HTP consumers who were current and former smokers started using HTPs and used them regularly. We analyzed cross-sectional data for 1815 adults (aged 19+) who participated in the 2020 International …
Children’s Greenness Exposure and IQ-Associated DNA Methylation
Epigenetics is known to be involved in regulatory pathways through which greenness exposure influences child development and health. We aimed to investigate the associations between residential surrounding greenness and DNA methylation changes in children, and further assessed the association between DNA methylation and children's intelligence quotient (IQ) in a prospective cohort study. We identified cytosine-guanine dinucleotide sites (CpGs) as…
Deconstructing neoliberalism in global citizenship discourses
This study explored ways in which official social studies textbooks in South Korea promote global citizenship given the dominant neoliberal ideology in the field of education. Employing soft versus critical global citizenship education (GCE) and critical discourse analysis, this study analyzed 12 middle-school (seventh to ninth grades) social studies textbooks that are mandatory in Korean public schools. The findings of this study demonstrate the…
Global citizenship, migration and national curriculum
Scotland and South Korea are experiencing novel challenges in educating for and about migrant populations. Through a critical discourse analysis of these nations’ national curricula, we consider the guidance educators are offered in teaching about issues related to migration in increasingly diverse classrooms. Framed by theories of critical global citizenship, our analysis suggests that both curricula use ambiguous approaches to global citizenshi…

This study explores two Korean American social studies teachers’ perceptions and experiences of the teaching profession in multicultural, urban public high schools. Drawing upon critical race theory (CRT) and its interconnection to the model minority myth, the most dominant form of racism against Asians as theoretical underpinnings, this study focuses on: (1) Korean American teachers’ unique experiences of being racial minority educators teaching…
