    Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Luxury•2018

This article will consider how men’s underwear garments, that have been considered a functional necessity from the end of the nineteenth century, have become associated with desirable luxury. It will address the ways in which predominantly invisible, inconspicuous male underwear garments, manufactured by traditional companies with a sense of their own heritage and using high-quality materials (such as Sunspel, Zimmerli, and Schiesser) become a fo…

  • ‘Or is it Bacon in drag?’

Paul Rousseau, Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Fashion Style & Popular Culture•2016

After an article appeared in The Guardian newspaper in 2014, the variety of labels that had been ascribed to one of John Deakin’s photographs became apparent and prompted the question, ‘or is it Bacon in drag?’ from a contributor to the newspaper’s comments stream. This conversation outlines the steps undertaken by Paul Rousseau, the archivist at The John Deakin Archive, to investigate whether the sitter in this photograph could indeed be the art…

  • Looking queer? Gay men’s negotiations between masculinity and femininity in style and dress in the twenty-first century

    Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Clothing Cultures•2015

Appearance has long been of concern to gay men, whether manifested as an identifiable visibility, an intentional invisibility or a conscious playing with gendered and social signifiers. This ties to Judith Butler’s propositions that gendered identities are performed in relation to external societal and internal personal pressures and considerations, as well as being regulated by cultural discourses. The notions of gay male femininity and the auth…

  • Costume or Dress? The Use of Clothing in the Gay Pornography of Jim French's Colt Studio

    Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Fashion Theory•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 2

It would seem that one of the intentions of the viewer of gay pornography would be to see the sexual engagement of the participants (and perhaps the “money shot”) with a focus upon the gymnastics and writhing of bodies that constitute the practice and representation of sexual activity within the film. However, before nudity or nakedness is presented the “characters” are dressed. Using the films and photography of Colt Studio and its founder Jim F…

  • Creative chaos? Globalization, agglomeration and the metropolis

    Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article offers a formal macro-economic exposition of a creativity-driven metropolitan-region located within the global context of abundance of capital, demand, information, and uncertainty. It draws on recent literature and US data to estimate a nonlinear relationship between the global risk-reward premium and the size of a metropolitan region’s creative labor force. The model offers criteria for interpreting each stage of the creative metro…

  • Considerations on a Gentleman's Posterior

    Shaun Cole•ARTICLE•Fashion Theory•2012•References: 2

In discussing J.C. Leyendecker's 1911 painting Man on a Bag used to advertise S.T. Cooper and Sons' Kenosha Klosed Krotch union suit, Richard Martin noted that the positioning of the male figure had to be careful to avoid raising concerns about anal anxiety, reflecting Freudian theories of sexual development. For this new revolutionary back opening for men's underwear it was essential to depict a rear view of the male figure wearing the garment. …
