Results from the Violin study
The results show the need for additional action to reduce IVV against migrants, especially in the identified public institutions focusing on immigration offices, health care institutions and city councils/district offices. Training and supervision could be set up for the employees of these institutions as IVV has a negative impact on mental health
Three-Month Follow-Up of the Post-Covid Syndrome after Admission to a Specialised Post-Covid Centre—A Prospective Study Focusing on Mental Health with Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)
Our findings align with previous research, claiming severe mental health symptoms in PASC syndrome, lasting for months after infection. In-depth assessment of risk and protective factors for the mental health implications of PASC is needed for the planning of health services and disease prevention
The association of perceived ethnic discrimination and institutional verbal violence with chronic stress in an immigrant sample
Immigrants are exposed to a variety of stressors, such as ethnic discrimination, and therefore experience a higher risk of developing adverse health outcomes. However, the role of potentially protective psychological factors is not well-studied. The present study addresses the question how discrimination and institutional verbal violence (IVV) are associated with chronic stress in an immigrant sample. In addition, this study highlights moderating…
The mental health of first- and second-generation migrant vs. native healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the challenging working conditions of healthcare workers (HCWs) in many regions. A considerable proportion of HCWs in Germany are migrants facing additional migration-related stressors. The aim of this cross-sectional web-based survey was to examine depressive and generalized anxiety symptoms among migrant and native HCWs in Germany during the pandemic. We compared 780 migrant (first- and second-generation) HCWs …

Discrimination is a crucial post migratory stressor but there is little research on perceived discrimination by Syrian refugees. This study aims to assess self-reported discrimination by Syrian refugees with a residence permit in Germany, determine its forms, places, and predictors, and explore its possible relation with mental health. Sociodemographics, migration-specific characteristics, traumatic life events, quality of life, perceived discrim…

The Perceptions of Trauma, Complaints, Somatization, and Coping Strategies among Syrian Refugees in Germany—A Qualitative Study of an At-Risk Population
Background: A high prevalence of mental distress, especially posttraumatic stress disorder, has been widely confirmed among refugees. In order to establish adequate interventions in psychotherapy, however, it must first be examined whether refugees have similar ideas and concepts of stress, trauma, and healing. This study, therefore, aimed to analyze the representations of trauma, self-reported complaints, indications of somatization, and coping …
