  • Affective relatedness, temporalities, and the politics of care in a medical South-South partnership: The Cuban mission in Brazil

    Open Access•M Lidola•ARTICLE•Focaal•2024

For more than 50 years, Cuba has been one of the most important players in the field of international medical care in the Global South. Between 2013 and 2018, Cuba sent nearly 18,000 Cuban health professionals to Brazil within the framework of the More Doctors Program to assist during the Brazilian public health care system's state of emergency. This article focuses on local encounters and emergent socialities between Cuban physicians and Brazili…

  • Civilizing the Other: Beauty, Intimate Labor, and Affective Encounters in Berlin's Brazilian Waxing Studios

    Open Access•M Lidola•ARTICLE•Cadernos Pagu•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Over the past 15 years, waxing (hair removal) studios have emerged in central Berlin and grown rapidly in number. Specializing in the 'Brazilian method,' this beauty salon sector has increasingly been occupied by Brazilian migrants. In addition to being a simple hair removal service, I argue that the intimate work carried out in these salons encompasses an educational and even civilizing effort from the point of view of Brazilian depiladoras: The…

  • Negotiating horizontality in medical South–South cooperation: The Cuban mission in Rio de Janeiro’s urban peripheries

Open Access•M Lidola, Fabiano Tonaco Borges•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2017

For more than 50 years, Cuba has been one of the most important players in the field of international medical cooperation in the Global South. This paper inquir…

  • Análise da experiência de médicos cubanos numa metrópole brasileira segundo o Método Paideia

Open Access•Lilian Soares Vidal Terra, Fabiano Tonaco Borges et al.•ARTICLE•Ciência & Saúde Coletiva•2016

Open Access•Claudia Liebelt, Anna Katharina Skornia et al.•BOOK•Anthropological Perspectives on…•2015

  • Negotiating Integration in Berlin’s Waxing Studios: Brazilian Migrants’ Gendered Appropriation of Urban Consumer Spaces and ‘Ethnic’ Entrepreneurship

    Open Access•M Lidola•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2014•Cited by: 4

Current discussions on immigration in Germany emphasize the economic benefits of migrant economies and ethnic entrepreneurship, pointing to the positive effects on the ‘integration’ of migrants into the German labour market and into German society. This article focuses on the ethnographic example of Brazilian small-scale businesswomen in Berlin, who run cosmetic salons specialized in body hair removal, and how they embed their businesses in the B…
