Property Wars in Cyprus
Between 1953 and 1974, the main actors in the “Cyprus Dispute” resorted to weapons in order to pursue interests or defend their rights. Way into the second half of the 1990s, the international community maintained a fear that a war might resume between the two communities that could ultimately engulf both sides of the Aegean. Property wars in Cyprus
In the years that followed after the Turkish intervention in 1974, the UN buffer zone which cuts across the island of Cyprus has created a physical and social barrier between the Greek and Turkish communities. It also separates the internationally recognised administration in the South from the Northern part that is under Turkey's military protection. It focuses on the Southeastern Anatolia Project (Turkish: Guneydog uu Anadolu Projesi (GAP)) that is being undertaken by various adminis- trations of the government of the Republic of Turkey in the last few decades and tries to shed light on some important legal issues surrounding it. On 3 October 2005, Turkey began negotiations with the European…

It also attempts to highlight the potential challenges for eventual membership that lie ahead, while commenting on the problems Turkey may face in its future negotiations with the EU—with particular emphasis on the areas in which Turkish foreign policy may need “further” adaptation. The…
War crimes and the war in Iraq
The purpose of this article is to comment on the issue of whether the conduct of the military operations in question were of such a nature as to potentially trigger any legal consequences for the leaders who initiated the second Iraq War. In this respect, we will start with a brief summarisation of what has happened in the region in the spring of 2003. That will then lead us to a discussion involving the 1998 and the 1949 Geneva Convention. Those…

The Silver Anniversary of the UN Human Rights Committee
After a brief referral to the events leading up to the setting up of the framework under which the HRC functions this article considers whether the extent to which the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) has contributed to the global realisation of human rights within the ICCPR framework since it held its first meeting in March 1977 can be considered as satisfactory
