Using Linked Data to create provenance-rich metadata interlinks
Linked data (LD) have the capability to open up and share materials, held in libraries, archives and museums (LAMs), in ways that are restricted by many existing metadata standards. Specifically, LD interlinking can be used to enrich data and to improve data discoverability on the Web through interlinking related resources across datasets and institutions. However, there is currently a notable lack of interlinking across leading LD projects in LA…
Egyptian Cases of Blasphemy and Apostasy against Islam
This article assesses some recent modern day cases of blasphemy and apostasy that occurred in Egypt between 1990 and 2001. The court cases include: the conviction of Salah al-Din Muhsin who was imprisoned in January 2001, the case of Farag Foda who was convicted of blasphemy and was then shot dead in the street in 1992, and the case of Naguib Mahfouz, the first Egyptian Nobel Prize winner, who was accused of blasphemy and was later attacked and s…
The Interpretation of Qur'anic Text to Promote or Negate the Death Penalty for Apostates and Blasphemers

This article will attempt to determine whether the death penalty for the act of apostasy can be identified with the Qu…
Is the declaration of human rights universal
The article questions whether universalism and cultural relativism can exist together as a basis for making moral choices in today's multi‐cultural global environment. It considers whether this co‐existence offers a practical compromise or merely creates confusion. The idea is assessed within the context of human rights in Islam, where the contrast with the West has been the subject of much debate, but its possible union with the West is also dis…
The history of human rights across the regions
The article begins with a necessary description of how the term ‘human rights’ originated, and a consideration of how ‘universal’ it is possible for human rights to be, compared with the differing views of human rights in existing cultural systems. There follows a discussion of the continual argument between the ‘universal’ approach towards human rights with the diametric perspective of ‘cultural relativism’, contrasting the African and Islamic p…
