  • Wellbeing and quality of life secondary outcomes from a Mediterranean Diet and walking randomised controlled trial in older Australians

    Open Access•Ella L Bracci, Courtney R Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2026

Objective: The Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) and physical activity (PA) can enhance mood and support psychological wellbeing in adults. However, the combined effect is relatively unknown. MedWalk aimed to determine the combined effect on wellbeing, psychological health and quality of life, compared to a control group. Design: Analysis of secondary outcomes from the MedWalk 12-month cluster-randomised controlled trial. Participants completed Total …

  • Enforced home-working under lockdown and its impact on employee wellbeing

Open Access•Katharine Platts, Jeff Breckon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Experience of home-working under lockdown varies amongst groups. Knowledge of these differences provide employers with tools to better manage employee wellbeing during periods of crisis. While personal factors are not controllable, the quality of leadership provided to employees, and the 'place and pattern' of work, can be actively managed to positive effect. Innovative flexible working practices will help to build greater workforce resilience

  • ‘What’s the point when you only lose a pound?’ Reasons for attrition from a multi-component childhood obesity treatment intervention

Leanne J Staniford, Robert J Copeland et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2019

This study explored the causes of drop-out from a community-based multi-component childhood obesity treatment intervention (MCTI), considering parent and child perspectives in order to develop future interventions which manage potential attrition more effectively. Semi-structured interviews explored attrition amongst a sample of children (n = 10) and their parents (n = 10) who dropped out of a community-based MCTI. Parents and children highlighte…

  • A phenomenological exploration of exercise mental toughness

Lee Crust, Christian Swann et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2014

Although elite sport has provided an ideal context for exploring mental toughness (MT), currently, there is scant research examining how this construct might be equally applicable in exercise settings, where high rates of attrition have been reported. The present research, therefore, aimed to address this gap, and to understand and conceptualise exercise mental toughness (EMT) through in-depth phenomenological interviews with a range of exercise …

  • A grounded theory of successful long-term physical activity behaviour change

Andrew Hutchison, A J Hutchison et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2013

This paper presents a grounded theory of successful long-term physical activity (PA) behaviour change. Currently, a range of theoretical frameworks are available to guide researchers and practitioners in the development and implementation of PA behaviour change interventions. However, none of these theoretical approaches are specifically intended to account for PA-related behaviours. In addition, there is limited evidence to support the efficacy …

  • Grounded Theory-Based Research within Exercise Psychology

Andrew Hutchison, Andrew J Hutchison et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Psychology•2011

This article critically reviews the current body of grounded theory research within exercise psychology. Previous evidence has questioned the quality of grounded theory research within this academic domain. Guidelines for assessing grounded theory research are presented based on the common defining characteristics of the methodology and other published recommendations for assessing qualitative research. The review identified 21 articles that repo…

  • "Booster" interventions to sustain increases in physical activity in middle-aged adults in deprived urban neighbourhoods

Open Access•Emma Scott, Emma J Scott et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The main study will continue with the original recruitment target of 600 participants but to ensure feasibility, it is necessary to increase recruitment and improve the numbers of those followed-up who have evaluable data. Strategies will include increasing the number of initial invitations sent out and improving the training of research assistants and participants in the positioning of the accelerometer

  • A randomised controlled trial and cost-effectiveness evaluation of "booster" interventions to sustain increases in physical activity in middle-aged adults in deprived urban neighbourhoods

Open Access•Daniel Hind, Emma Scott et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

    Current Controlled Trials: ISRCTN56495859; ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00836459

  • Using QSR‐NVivo to facilitate the development of a grounded theory project

Andrew Hutchison, Andrew John Hutchison et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2009•Cited by: 25•References: 6

This paper demonstrates how the software package QSR‐NVivo can be used to faciitate a grounded theory approach. Recent research evidence has questioned the methodological quality of many studies that claim to utilise grounded theory. This paper argues that qualitative data analysis software can be used to encourage good quality grounded theory research by facilitating many of the key processes and characteristics associated with this approach. To…
