  • The Potential for Scaling Up a Fog Collection System on the Eastern Escarpment of Eritrea

    Open Access•Mussie Fessehaye, Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2015

Fog is an untapped natural resource. A number of studies have been undertaken to understand its potential as an alternative or complementary water source. In 2007, a pilot fog-collection project was implemented in 2 villages on the Eastern Escarpment of Eritrea. The government of Eritrea, buoyed by the project’s positive results, has encouraged research into and application of fog-collection technologies to alleviate water-supply problems in this…

  • Water issues in Kuwait

    Ali Mohamed Al‐Damkhi, Rana A Al-Fares et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

Kuwait, an arid country, has an acute lack of natural groundwater resources, an increasing demand for water supply, but no clear plan for water management. On this basis, a future water crisis will be inevitable. This paper offers proposals that could lead to the sustainable management of water resources in Kuwait. The objective should be less the increase of supply than the improvement of its reliability and quality. The establishment of a unifi…

  • Emissions inventory, ISCST, and neural network modelling of air pollution in Kuwait

    Reem S Ettouney, Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

This paper focuses on modelling of emission inventory, pollutant dispersion by the industrial source complex short term model (ISCST), and neural network analysis of air pollution in Kuwait. A novel neural network‐based scheme is suggested and applied to site‐specific short‐ and medium‐term forecasting of ozone concentrations. Two feed forward artificial neural networks (ANN) are used to improve the performance of time series predictions. Results…

  • Two case studies of air pollution from Oman and Kuwait

    Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

The paper reports a study of air quality data in a suburban industrial area in the Sultanate of Oman and an urban residential area in Kuwait. In Oman, the monitoring was conducted at the Oman liquid natural gas plant (OLNG) at Qalhat near Sur, on the east coast of Oman. In Kuwait, the sampling site was within Kuwait University, an area affected by heavy road traffic routes. The pollutants included methane, non‐methane hydrocarbons, carbon monoxid…

  • Kuwait's 1991 environmental tragedy

    Open Access•Ali Mohamed Al‐Damkhi, Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2009

Purpose Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990 precipitated an ecological tragedy in the Arabian Gulf region. During the course of the invasion Kuwait suffered severe losses to both its oil industry and its ecological system. The scale of damage was enormous, ranging from destruction as a result of oil fires and spills to the economic deterioration of Kuwait's oil industry. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the lessons learned from Ku…

  • Levels of heavy metals in outdoor and indoor dusts in Muscat, Oman

    BASMA YAGHI, Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004

The concentrations of lead, copper, nickel, zinc and chromium in outdoor and indoor dusts collected from different sites in Muscat, Oman, were determined by flame atomic absorption. Results showed a wide range of concentrations, the means in the outdoor dust being, 65 ± 50, 124 ± 316, 47 ± 45, 930 ± 666 and 64 ± 26 mg kg− 1 for lead, zinc, copper, nickel and chromium, respectively. The 2001 Omani phasing out of leaded fuel resulted in low levels …

  • Environmental considerations in urban planning

    Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab, A AL‐ARAIRNI•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004

The history of cities around the world tells us that many environmental problems could have been avoided through better thought at the planning phases. The present paper considers the issues of overpopulation, construction expansion, urbanization, and industrial boom and expansion. Examples of developments in Kuwait are cited, focusing more on the repercussion of the industrial development. The paper will focus on the need for maintaining the sus…

  • Diurnal Variations of Air Pollution From Motor Vehicles in Residential Area

    Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab, Walid Bouhamra et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004

This paper employs the air quality data assembled by the Kuwait University mobile air pollution monitoring laboratory (Chemical Engineering Department). The experimental work has been conducted in the urban atmosphere of Khaldiya residential area in Kuwait University during 1997. The site was selected to represent a typical residential area which is mainly under high traffic influences. The data collected consist mainly of measurements of carbon …

  • Analysis of ozone pollution in the Shuaiba industrial area in Kuwait

    Sabah A Abdul‐Wahab, Sabah Abdul‐Wahab et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000

Analysis of ozone pollution in the Shuaiba Industrial Area of Kuwait was performed over a period of 12 months, from December 1994 to November 1995. The Shuaiba Industrial Area houses several large scale industries which include a petroleum refinery, a complex of petrochemical plants, cement plant, chlorine and soda factory, desalination plant, power station, and shipping port for oil export. Measurements were performed by a mobile station capable…
