    Open Access•Pirkko Moisala•ARTICLE•AlterNative An International…•2019

This article studies the heritagization of Tamu (Nepal) music, between 1975 and 2016. • Reflections on an Ethnomusicological Study of a Contemporary Western Art Music Composer

    Pirkko Moisala•ARTICLE•British Journal of Ethnomusicology•2011•References: 6

Editor's Note: In 2009, ethnomusicologist Pirkko Moisala published a book on the work of contemporary Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (b.1952). In this short item, we invited Moisala to reflect on the process of writing a composer biography from the perspective of someone who has worked for many years in the field of ethnomusicology, reflections which were not possible to include in the book itself. Notes 1. For more on dialogic research methodol…

  • "Cognitive study of music as culture - basic premises for "cognitive ethnomusicology

    Pirkko Moisala•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Ethnomusicology has since Alan Merriam's The Anthropology of Music (1964) looked for culture relativistic methods to study music as culture. The reviewed literature of “cognitive ethnomusicology” investigates in various ways how people in different cultures conceptualize music and ‘think musically’. Ethnomusicological ideas are related to the main stream of cognitive music research, and the quest to combine culture‐bound models and generic proces…

  • The Wide Field of Finnish Ethnomusicology

    Pirkko Moisala•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1994

It is easy to agree with many of the characteristics of Finnish ethnomusicology described above, even though each of us has our own personal view of the same phenomena. It is interesting to note, however, how different are our views of ethnomusicology as a discipline. Some regard EuroAmerican ethnomusicology and the European tradition of folk music research as separate domains, whereas to others ethnomusicology includes both of these. In addition…
