  • Health Motivation in the Influencer Era

    Nicole H O’Donnell, Sara Erlichman et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2025

This research explored how personal and entertainment role models motivate an individual's health goals, and how following a role model on social media affects this process. A survey of 404 adults revealed that identifying a personal role model, such as a family member, friend, or healthcare professional, had a stronger influence on health motivation in comparison to identifying an entertainment role model. Additionally, our findings indicated th…

  • Examining Attenuated Responses to Coronavirus Disease-2019 Risk

    Open Access•Minhee Choi, Nicole H O’Donnell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2024

This study examines attenuated risk responses among individuals who do not adhere to preventive COVID-19 measures (e.g., antimaskers). Guided by the Social Amplification of Risk Model, a survey ( N = 373) of nonabiding populations showed that news media use was positively associated with risk perceptions, information seeking and sharing, and preventive measure adoption. By contrast, negative emotions to COVID-19 and perceived knowledge hindered p…

  • Tweeting a Pandemic

    Jeanine P D Guidry, Nicole H O’Donnell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about an urgent need for public health departments to clearly communicate their prevention, testing, and treatment recommendations. Previous research supports that Twitter is an important platform that public health departments use to communicate crisis information to stakeholders. This study aimed to shed light on how international health departments shared relevant information about COVID-19 on Twitter in 2020. We …

  • Reducing Food Waste During Covid-19

    Open Access•Nicole H O’Donnell, Ismail Karabas et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2022

This study investigates how role model stories may inspire food waste reduction during times of perceived food scarcity. We conducted a 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment ( N = 358, U.S. adults) to test the effectiveness of messages that emphasized role model success (reduced waste/zero-waste) and achievement difficulty (easy/difficult) on intentions to set a personal food waste goal. Exposure to role models who lived a zero-waste lifestyle had a …

  • Stay Socially Distant and Wash Your Hands

    Open Access•Jeanine P D Guidry, Nicole H O’Donnell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2021

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly spread around the world, and since currently no treatments that are safe and effective for large groups of people nor a vaccine are available, the best way to prevent the illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus causing it. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive effects of both demographic and psychosocial factors originating with the Health Belief Model on reported intent to ad…

  • The Effect of Number of Follower Cues and Organization Type on Perceived Social Norm Responses to CSR Campaigns on Social Media

Yoonjoo Lee, Yoon-Joo Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interactive Advertising•2020

This study examined how social norms can be formed differently across gender in the context of perceiving an alcohol company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns on social media (Facebook and Twitter). Even though social norms have been known to be powerful factors in generating positive attitudes and behavior, few studies have examined the boundary conditions and the antecedents of perceived social norm formation in the context of c…

  • What drives support for self-driving car technology in the United States

Graham Dixon, P Sol Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Recent advances in automotive technology have made fully automated self-driving cars technologically feasible. Despite offering many benefits such as increased safety, improved fuel efficiency, and greater disability access, public support for self-driving cars remains low. While previous studies find that demographic factors such as age and sex influence self-driving car support, limited research has examined variables that are well known to pre…

  • Assessment of Women’s Plus-Size Swimwear for Industry Applications

    Deborah A Christel, Nicole H O’Donnell•ARTICLE•Fashion Practice•2016

Using the functional, expressive and aesthetic (FEA) consumer needs model, this research investigated plus-size women’s swimwear needs. Swimming is a popular activity for women, which offers numerous physical and mental health benefits. However, little is known about plus-size women’s design preferences and satisfaction with swimwear. Attributes of swimwear were assessed through a mixed-methods qualitative survey (n = 58) and five follow-up focus…
