Risk perception and adaptation of riparian farmers to extreme weather events in the Maule river basin (Chile)
Extreme weather events intensified by climate change have significantly affected the agricultural sector, especially river valley agriculture worldwide. This study aims to assess how riparian farmers perceive climate risks and how these perceptions influence the adoption of adaptation strategies. To this end, a survey was designed and administered to 206 small and mid-size farmers. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using principal components v…
Construction and intergenerational transmission of the perception of volcanic risk in Mexico
Intergenerational transmission of historical memory of volcanic risk in Mexico
Collective memory is built on concepts and meanings that a population shares and builds over time. These contents are perpetuated through oral transmission from generation to generation. In the case of populations exposed to volcanic risk, coexistence with the volcano is part of their history and daily life. The present study focuses on understanding the meanings, perceptions, and responses facing (before and after) volcanic crises. All these are…

Mexican Beliefs and Attitudes Toward Hysterectomy and Gender-Role Ideology in Marriage
One hundred and sixty-one Mexican respondents completed a questionnaire that measured beliefs and attitudes toward hysterectomy and another that measured gender-role ideology in marriage (GRIMQ). The participants were divided into two groups according to the GRIMQ: "high machismo/marianismo" and "low machismo/marianismo" groups. The participants belonging to the first group showed the most negative attitudes toward hysterectomy. In this group, me…
Trust, acceptance and knowledge of technological and environmental hazards in Chile
Studies over the past decade have found empirical links between trust in risk management institutions and the risk perceptions and acceptability of various individual hazards. Mostly addressing food technologies, no study to date has explored wider possible relationships among all four core variables (risk, benefit, trust and acceptability) covering a heterogeneous group of hazards. Our prime objective was to ascertain effects among social trust …
Risk Perception, Stress and Coping Strategies in Two Catastrophe Risk Situations
This study examined the influence of risk perception on stress reactions and coping strategies in 191 Mexican people who had experienced a catastrophe either natural (SR group) or industrial (IR group), and who are still exposed to the same kind of risks. Results showed that for the IR group and for people who rank industrial risks as the highest priority, from among a list of risks, the stress levels were higher and coping strategies were passiv…
