For love and money: Navigating values at the antiques roadshow event
Antiques Roadshow Events are held in historic locations across the United Kingdom. On site, experts evaluate objects brought in by attendees, who are often cast as passive recipients, while edited highlights make up the long‐running BBC TV program. Through Collaborative Event Ethnography at one Roadshow Event we show how object stories are navigated through “value talk” between attendees and experts in front of live audiences. Value is not a meas…
Queue-munity engagement: Collaborative Event Ethnography at the Antiques Roadshow in Kent
Using Collaborative Event Ethnography as a research method, a team of 21 researchers conducted fieldwork at the Antiques Roadshow in Ightham Mote, Kent. This article reflects on the experience of queuing at the event and how it was experienced and discussed by researchers and participants. Drawing upon Mol, the article approaches the practice of queuing as involving an inherent multiplicity of often contradictory experiences through which idealis…

The article follows constructions of masculinity through an analysis of: (1) the working environment of Romanian men, generally characterized as ridden with ris…
Enacting Culture in a Romanian Village
“Local culture” has been the focus of anthropological endeavour since the discipline’s beginnings, and the concept has a long history of re-defining and re-framing on all levels (spatial, political, and so on). One particularly useful definition of “culture” put forward by Bourdieu is that which is “taken for granted”—what people do without necessarily being aware of it. Culture is, therefore, similar to ideology, and not unlike Foucault’s notion…
Forging Folklore, Disrupting Archives: Curatorial Explorations between Tradition and Innovation
This article describes how artists, scholars and curators have used folkloric collections and exhibitions as tools to explore the relationship between tradition and innovation. Contemporary art practice has seen a growing interest toward the use of folkloric material. With this in mind, in our curatorial work on the Forging Folklore, Disrupting Archives exhibition, we experiment with new methods of ethnographic representation. The article highlig…
