  • Vaporwar and military contents fandom

Abby Waysdorf•ARTICLE•The Journal of Fandom Studies•2022

This article investigates vaporwar – a kind of military fanvid where military footage is remixed, set to music and given a ‘vaporwave’ makeover through filters and editing. While a niche group, it is a growing one and loved by its fans. Why? Drawing on Turk and Johnson’s idea of looking at vidding as an ecology, this article suggests that these videos should be seen as part of a ‘contents fandom’ of the military. This term is adapted from ‘conten…

  • Remix in the age of ubiquitous remix

    Open Access•Abby Waysdorf•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2021

What is remix today? No longer a controversy, no longer a buzzword, remix is both everywhere and nowhere in contemporary media. This article examines this situation, looking at what remix now means when it is, for the most part, just an accepted part of the media landscape. I argue that remix should be looked at from an ethnographic point of view, focused on how and why remixes are used. To that end, this article identifies three ways of conceptu…

  • Placing fandom, studying fans: Modified acafandom in practice

    Open Access•Abby Waysdorf•ARTICLE•Transformative Works and Cultures•2020

For nearly three decades, the field of fan studies has helped to shift the conversation on fandom from a study of pathological individuals to exploring how groups make use of and transform the contemporary media landscape. Fandom itself is also changing. What was once a niche subculture is now a way for us to make sense of the mediated world around us. As the concept and structures of fandom expand, we as fandom researchers must broaden our metho…

This article investigates the potential role and use of place in long-term fandom, via a case study of fans of The Prisoner and its main filming location of Portmeirion in North Wales. Much research on film tourism focuses on one-time encounters, but fans of The Prisoner have been visiting and revisiting Portmeirion regularly for over 50 years, potentially developing a different sort of relationship with it. Based on interviews with 16 long-term …

This article examines the visitor experience of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWOHP) theme park at Universal Studios Orlando. The park is hugely popular and has been embraced by the series’ devoted but critical fanbase. Prior research on theme parks has generally focused on critiques of their form, leading to a limited understanding of their appeal. This article asks how fan-visitors interpret this simulated environment, and what leads the…
