Ethnobotany and the Productivity-Endurability Trade-off
From field to the edge of memory: The ethnobotany and conservation of indigenous wheats in Georgia, the Caucasus
Background: Wheat is the third most produced crop and provides roughly 20% of the world’s calories. Georgia preserves one of the world’s oldest and richest traditions of wheat cultivation with over 15 Triticum species historically cultivated, including some dating back to 8000 years ago. But many species, varieties, and practices are either under threat or lost. Early botanical studies identified two distinct centers of indigenous wheat diversity…

Unity in diversity-food plants and fungi of Sakartvelo (Republic of Georgia), Caucasus
Background The Republic of Georgia is part of the Caucasus biodiversity hotspot, and human agricultural plant use dates back at least 6000 years. Over the last years, lots of ethnobotanical research on the area has been published. In this paper, we analyze the use of food plants in the 80% of Georgia not occupied by Russian forces. We hypothesized that (1) given the long tradition of plant use, and the isolation under Soviet rule, plant use both …

The Use of “Use Value”: Quantifying Importance in Ethnobotany
Your Poison in My Pie—the Use of Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Leaves in Sakartvelo, Republic of Georgia, Caucasus, and Gollobordo, Eastern Albania
A comparative ethnobotany of Khevsureti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Tusheti, Svaneti, and Racha-Lechkhumi, Republic of Georgia (Sakartvelo), Caucasus
Plant species, and uses, found in our study, both for Georgia in general, as well as for its regions, showed clear relations to the wider Caucasus - Asia Minor - Balkans cultural complex. However, plant use in Georgia was much more diverse than reported in other studies from Eurasia
Ethno-ecological contexts of the Skhalta Gorge and the Upper Svaneti (Georgia, the Caucasus)
The applicability and analytical power of political ecology is improved by study of the 'ethno-ecological context', which is based on the concept of socio-ecological systems (SES). It represents an operating principle of interactions between the ecological and social systems of a specific locality, developing under different historical, political and climatic regimes. We compare two socio-ecological systems in the high mountain regions of Georgia…
