Alternative Archival Ecologies of Memory
This article explores how memory is shaped by media ecologies, emphasising embodied and postcolonial perspectives. Challenging digital and Eurocentric archival practices and its infrastructures, we examine the disembodiment of memory in digital environments and advocate for alternative, embodied forms of remembrance. Drawing on thinkers such as Stiegler, Simondon, Derrida and Foucault, the text underscores the ontological and political stakes of …
The Enaction of Embodied Metaphors in Dante’s Phenomenology of Evil
Recent developments in metaphor theory stress its embodied character. This article brings together these transformational insights and considers them through the lenses of Dante’s approach, which we may call proto-phenomenological, to the phenomenon of evil. Despite the substantial work on different aspects of Dante’s oeuvre, concerning philosophy, theology and poetry, there has been little reflection on his specific phenomenological hermeneutics…
A critical-embodied phenomenology of Mestizo identity
In this article, we consider Mexican Muralism, specifically the works of Diego Rivera, as a prominent manifestation of artistic media ecologies that provide affordances for conversations and interactions which amplify social beliefs and turn subjective judgements into intersubjective reality. We analyse this reality from the perspectives of embodied cognition and critical phenomenology. We use this conceptual apparatus to examine the genesis of m…

Conceptual Problems With Disembodied Cognition in Learning Environment(s) and the Alternative of Embodied Creativity
The article is motivated by today’s practical realities and theoretical transformations that have affected education on a major scale. The shift from in-person to online classrooms at the beginning of the pandemic brought forward a series of issues related to embodied conditioning for creative strategies in the learning process. After presenting the shortcomings of the disembodied approach to education, we emphasize the role of the embodied (soma…
Embodied Cognition and Empathic Experiences in War Communication
Using the perspective of phenomenological-enactive embodied cognition, this paper examines the role of the body in constituting specific social interactions via specific media ecologies (war imagery) during the times of (refugee) crisis. Such media ecologies give affordances that can amplify social beliefs and turn subjective judgments into an intersubjective action. We consider the human body in relation to war media as playing an important role…
Enactive approach to social interactions in religious media ecologies
In this article we examine the role of the body in constituting specific social interactions via religious media ecologies from the perspective of the enactive embodied cognition. Religious media ecologies give affordances for conversation and interaction which amplify not only religious but also social beliefs and turn subjective judgements into an intersubjective reality. Hence, despite the traditional emphasis on rational, verbal forms of soci…
The Body in Religious Media Ecologies
This paper explores the body-schematic and body-imaginative processes that underlie individuals’ participation in the public sphere via religious media ecologies. Utilising embodied cognition and social critique, the authors outline how subaltern counterpublics make use of the body to enact micro-oppositions to mainstream discourses. The paper also discloses the origins of higher objectivities (identity, sense of togetherness, justice, plausibili…
Early Surveys in Latin America and Transnational Communication Research, 1941–1945
This article examines the history of survey and communication research in Latin America. Aiming to contribute to a more robust transnational history of communication research in the American continent we examine the works of Nelson Rockefeller's OIAA (Office of Inter-American Affairs) and Hadley Cantril in several Latin American countries. We argue that, despite the importance of these early studies, they are not considered in the official histor…
