  • Assessing children’s incremental word knowledge in the upper primary grades

Open Access•Iris Monster, Agnes Tellings et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2021

Word knowledge acquisition is an incremental process that relies on exposure. As a result, word knowledge can broadly range from recognizing the word’s lexical status, to knowing its meaning in context, and to knowing its meaning independent of context. The present study aimed to model incremental word knowledge in 1454 upper primary school children from grades 3 to 5 by investigating their abilities on three word knowledge tasks originating from…

  • Connective frequencies in child-directed texts

    Open Access•Agnes Tellings, Agnes E J M Tellings et al.•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2020

Starting from a usage-based perspective of language acquisition, the present study investigates the occurrence of connectives in BasiLex, an 11.5 million word corpus of texts Dutch children encounter during the primary school years (grades 1–6). Specifically, we investigate how connective frequencies change across grades, how these changes reflect the theorized orders of connective acquisition in the work of Bloom et al. (1980) and Evers-Vermeul …

  • BasiScript

Agnes Tellings, Nelleke Oostdijk et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2018

This short paper introduces BasiScript, a 9-million-word corpus of contemporary Dutch texts written by primary school children. The data were collected over three years with 17,216 children contributing texts throughout this period. Each word token in the corpus is annotated with the correct orthographical form, the associated lemma and the part of speech. The most frequent polysemous words have been annotated for word meaning, while all words in…

  • Evidence-Based Practice in the social sciences? A scale of causality, interventions, and possibilities for scientific proof

    Open Access•Agnes Tellings•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2017

This article discusses Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in the social sciences. After a brief outline of the discussion, the work of William Herbert Dray (1921–2009) is examined. Dray, partly following Collingwood, worked on different forms of causality and methodology in historical explanation (in comparison to the social sciences), based on a distinction between causes and reasons. Dray’s ladder of rational understanding is also explored here. Tak…

  • Developing a Structural Model of Reading

Karien Coppens, K M Coppens et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2013

The purpose of the present study was to develop a structural model of reading based on the Lexical Quality Hypothesis (Perfetti & Hart, 2002). Data from a 4-year longitudinal study of Dutch primary school children with and without hearing loss were used to conduct an exploratory analysis of how lexical components (i.e., decoding skills, lexical decision, and lexical use) relate to one another and to reading comprehension. Our structural model sup…

  • Mode of Acquisition as a Factor in Deaf Children's Reading Comprehension

Loes Wauters, L N Wauters et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2008

This article examines the role of mode of acquisition (MoA) of word meanings in reading comprehension: children acquire word meanings using perceptual information (e.g., hearing, seeing, or smelling the referent) and/or linguistic information (e.g., verbal explanations). A total of 72 deaf and 99 hearing children between 7 and 15 years of age performed a self-paced reading task. Comprehension scores increased with age in both groups, but reading …

  • An Unhappy and Utterly Pitiable Creature? Life and Self-Images of Deaf People in the Netherlands at the Time of the Founding Fathers of Deaf Education

Agnes Tellings•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2005

This article describes how young deaf people in the Netherlands between 1809 and 1828 made the transition from living in a school for the Deaf,1 a rather protected community with mostly deaf people and with hearing people who could understand them rather well, to a life in hearing society with mostly hearing people who knew little about deafness. How did they manage to live in that hearing society? The article describes how these deaf people view…

  • Kohlberg and Freud

    Open Access•Agnes Tellings, Wouter van Haaften•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2001

In this contribution we propose a comparative reconstruction of Kohlberg's and Freud's theories of moral development. We concentrate not on the developmental processes and their driving forces, but on the emerging conceptions of morality according to both theories. Each of the developmental stages is characterized in terms of the different sets of criteria typically constituting the changing (implicit) rationale for moral judgement and action. Th…
