Zum variationslinguistischen Verhältnis von Stadt und Land
In this paper, we explore the geolinguistic relationship between urban and rural areas through the conceptualisation and modeling of spatial topologies. Geolinguistic topologies concern the structure of the mutual linguistic relationship between localities. They can be defined either deductively or on the basis of empirical data and represent the linguistic similarities or distances between localities. We operationalise and apply several such top…

Automatic detection of radial structures in dialect maps
To manually detect geometric structures in large quantities of dialect maps is a tedious and error-prone (if not impossible) task. Methods from stochastic image analysis and pattern recognition can help to automate, objectify and thus facilitate this process. This paper presents a quantitative method for detection of ellipsoid patterns and their centers in dialect maps using the Randomized Hough Transform . It will outline the necessary parameter…
Using fuzzy clustering to reveal recurring spatial patterns in corpora of dialect maps
In this article, a new method to identify groups of spatially similar dialect maps is presented. This is done by comparing statistical properties of the maps: the empirical covariance is measured for every map in a corpus of dialect maps. Then, the Fuzzy C-Means clustering method is applied to these covariance data. Thereby, one is able to detect and measure gradual similarities between maps. By employing the method on lexical data from the diale…
