Co-funding networks as a new tool in research evaluation
There is a growing interest in studying the influence of funding on scientific progress. Such analyses become more complex when the projects involved have two or more funding sources. This study examines FAs that mention the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and tries to achieve a broader, fuller, more singular view than previous studies of FP7 by visualising co-funding networks and conducting a structural analysis of inter-agency relationships. …
Public funding accountability
Fortunately, newly published findings and promising data sources presented in recent years have helped better our understanding of the process of scientific creation and communication and provide evidence of the importance of FAs. This paper seeks to help demonstrate the crucial role FAs play in evaluating research funding’s performance. A methodology based on the use of linked open metadata from diverse sources is presented for this purpose. The…
Co-citation analysis between coupler authors of a scientific domain’s citation identity
Anatomy of the top 1% most highly cited publications
Scientific excellence is an ongoing object of quantitative analysis of science and technology literature. The most commonly adopted of the various criteria for such quantification is to define highly cited papers as the ones lying in the first percentile (top 1%) of citation counts. Wagner and colleagues have recently proposed a new method in which citation counts are determined as a whole, irrespective of discipline. This study analyzes the prac…
Real influence
For the last 50 years, the journal impact factor (IF) has been the most prominent of all bibliometric indicators. Since the first Journal Citation Report was launched, the IF has been used, often improperly, to evaluate institutions, publications, and individuals. Its well-known significant technical limitations have not detracted from its popularity, and they contrast with the lack of consensus over the numerous alternatives suggested as complem…

Altmetrics as a research specialty (Dimensions, 2005-2018)
The scientific literature on altmetrics published from 2005 to 2018 was analysed. The overall structure of the speciality's intellectual landscape is depicted through clusters of co-cited references, analysing journal and author co-citations. The 56,936 references cited in the 8,145 papers of all kinds retrieved from the Dimensions bibliographic database were included in the initial dataset used in the analysis. Pathfinder networks were generated…
Constructing bibliometric networks
Documentación de fotografías en bancos de imágenes comerciales
Digital images are all around and their number increases every day. However, this growing volume contrasts with a poor description in the vast majority of cases. The value of a picture to illustrate the original event, or to be used in other contexts or situations, is based on an appropriate description. The purpose of this paper is to reduce the difficulties encountered in describing images by categorizing them and the agencies, specifying uses,…
Sistemas de búsqueda y visualización en bancos de imágenes comerciales
The advent of the internet, the impact of digital photography and the ability to scan large volumes of images has revolutionized the stock photography agencies. The transformation from analogue to digital photography has involved a substantial change in daily work processes, providing a large number of images online. The present work will reveal the profile and the basic features that any stock photography agency must offer on issues such as imag…
Colegios visibles
The results of a study of social networking by professors’ co-memberships in library and information science PhD juries between 1993 and 2006 are presented. Degree reduction and k-core methods are used to extract sub-networks and a Ward’s hierarchical cluster analysis is performed. The resulting network identifies five classes, whose members are actors occupying similar social positions, and at the same time different mechanisms, based mainly in …
Introducción al análisis de redes
Despite its long existence and international acceptance, network theory and analysis is a practically unknown approach in Documentation, both theoretically and methodologically speaking. Fortunately, this trend is changing, inasmuch as network theory and analysis may mean a quantitative and qualitative leap forward in the representation and analysis of the structure of all types of scientific domains, whether geographic, thematic or institutional…
