Collaboration in education research from Africa
This paper investigates the dynamics of collaboration by education researchers from Africa to understand better how they navigate competing expectations and prevailing asymmetries in the production of new scientific knowledge. Using OpenAlex data, the study analyzes collaboration types and the author positions of African researchers in the field of education. The results show that single authorship is most common, followed by institutional and in…
Beyond authorship
In this research article, we present the first cross-disciplinary descriptive analysis of the use of contribution statements. Our main objective is to obtain further insight on contributions by a variety of fields (Multidisciplinary, Health, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences) from the largest dataset used up to now. We examine more than 700,000 articles published between 2018 and 2023 in Elsevier and PLOS journals, in combination with bibliomet…
Publication patterns in the humanities
The humanities have distinct publication practices compared to the sciences, with books and local language literature being essential. This study aims to identify and analyze the publication patterns of humanities scholars in Spanish-speaking countries, revealing unique publication behaviors and fostering diverse perspectives rather than linear knowledge progression. We analyzed the publication histories of approximately 40,000 scholars from 1950…
A call for transparency in gender assignment approaches
An empirical review of the different variants of the probabilistic affinity index as applied to scientific collaboration
Consideraciones metodológicas sobre uso del impacto normalizado en convocatorias Severo Ochoa y María de Maetzu
In 2011, the research programmes for Support and accreditation of Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence and Units of Excellence Mara de Maeztu were launched for the first time. Since then, these accreditations have become one of the axes of the Spanish scientific policy. In these years, 186 million have been distributed and 26 centers and 16 units have been accredited. At the bibliometric level, one of the most relevant evaluation criteria is the ne…
Bibliometric and benchmark analysis of gold Open Access in Spain
This bibliometric study analyzes the research output produced by Spain during the 2005-2014 time period in Open Access (OA) journals indexed in Web of Science. The aim of the paper is to determine if papers published in Open Access journals contribute to the improvement of citation impact and collaboration indicators in Spanish research. The results are shown by scientific areas and compared with 17 European countries. Spain is the second highest…
Tendencias en mapas de la ciencia
The possibility of constructing science maps based on co-use of scientific literature by academic users is explored. We define co-use as the co-occurrence of scientific information requests by pairs of users recorded in platforms of scientific journals. We used search data from the University of Navarre to the ScienceDirect platform in 2012 in order to test the validity and to analyze the possibilities of this methodological approach. We conclude…
New data, new possibilities
This paper analyzes Altmetric.com, one of the most important altmetric data providers currently used. We have analyzed a set of publications with doi number indexed in the Web of Science during the period 2011-2013 and collected their data with the Altmetric API. 19% of the original set of papers was retrieved from Altmetric.com including some altmetric data. We identified 16 different social media sources from which Altmetric.com retrieves data.…
Compartir los datos de investigación en ciencia
The emergence in the scientific community of an initiative known as data sharing, consisting of sharing research data among researchers and aiming to maximize efforts and resources, is analysed. First, the concept of research data and the related technical difficulties depending on the discipline are reviewed. We also examine the motivations, origins and growth of this movement, which has had an important impact on the scientific community’s beha…
Tratamiento lingüístico de las preguntas en español en los sistemas de búsqueda de respuestas
We propose a procedure for the linguistic treatment of Spanish questions as a step prior to their classification in question answering systems. The main types of questionanswering systems and their basic architecture are described. We review the principal question classification taxonomies used to date and the different fields from which they have been derived. Finally, we present the stages of linguistic analysis that the text of questions in qu…
