  • Brain region- and sex-specific transcriptional profiles of microglia

Open Access•Kelly Barko, Micah A Shelton et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Microglia are resident macrophages of the brain, performing roles related to brain homeostasis, including modulation of synapses, trophic support, phagocytosis of apoptotic cells and debris, as well as brain protection and repair. Studies assessing morphological and transcriptional features of microglia found regional differences as well as sex differences in some investigated brain regions. However, markers used to isolate microglia in many prev…

  • Does the Time of Drug Administration Alter the Metabolic Risk of Aripiprazole

Open Access•Danielle A Chipchura, Zachary Freyberg et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Antipsychotic drugs cause metabolic abnormalities through a mechanism that involves antagonism of D 2 dopamine receptors (D 2 R). Under healthy conditions, insulin release follows a circadian rhythm and is low at night, and in pancreatic beta-cells, D 2 Rs negatively regulate insulin release. Since they are sedating, many antipsychotics are dosed at night. However, the resulting reduction in overnight D 2 R activity may disrupt 24 h rhythms in in…

  • The write stuff

    Robin Freyberg, Cindy K Chung et al.•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2014•References: 2

Clinicians often wonder if the single sentence from the Folstein Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) offers meaningful information about the patient. We compared single sentences derived from the MMSE generated by 3 groups of participants — hospitalized medically-ill patients with psychiatric comorbidity, hospitalized medically-ill patients without psychiatric comorbidity, and non-hospitalized non-psychiatric participants. These sentences were analyze…
