From Sources to Data
Recent research in the discipline of history has explored the extent to which the datafication of historical sources has transformed the historian’s craft. Despite a significant body of knowledge, the crucial issue of the epistemological status of data is still overlooked in the discipline. Following recent research in data studies, this article claims that, in order to study the uses and accessibility of data, one should ask what led these data …
Beyond capstone
This article introduces two new approaches to email archiving within French public agencies undertaken between 2020 and 2023 at the University of Angers (France). Open or Close Research Instruments? Conflicting Rationales in the Organization of Early Digital Medieval History in Europe (1960–1990)
From the late 1940s onwards, humanities scholars used computers in order to create new types of research instruments, e.g., databases, digital scholarly editions of texts and/or archives, computer programs, etc. Their ambitions in doing so consisted in saving time in tedious, repetitive and error-prone scholarly tasks, enhancing the circulation of data and/or scholarly information, or even contributing to the progress of an entire discipline.
