Globally informed and locally refined: Market, management, and carbon projections for the Southeastern United States forest sector
This study integrates recently updated National-Scale Volume Biomass (NSVB) estimates with a spatially-aware carbon accounting methodology in the SubRegional Timber Supply (SRTS) model to project forest market dynamics, land use change, inventory, and carbon fluxes for the Southeastern United States through 2070. Using four socioeconomic scenarios from the 2020 Resources Planning Act (RPA) Assessment aligned with IPCC Shared Socioeconomic Pathway…
Forest carbon under increasing product demand and land use change in the US Southeast
Quantifying additionality thresholds for forest carbon offsets in Mississippi pine pulpwood markets
When burning wood to generate energy makes climate sense
Over the last 20 years, IPPC reports have made it clear that the world must move beyond simply reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere to actively removing it from the skies. (Solar and wind can reduce carbon emissions, but they do not remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere). New BioEnergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technologies have been emerging that can remove carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere …
Impacts of hurricanes on forest markets and economic welfare: The case of hurricane Michael
This paper develops methodologies and identifies data gaps for understanding the impacts of hurricanes on forest product markets. Using the case of Hurricane Michael, we simulate damage to forest growing stock and forest area from alternative damage estimations (inventory and remote sensed). We then consider alternative scenarios for replanting, and the spatial distribution of salvage consumption. Beyond previous analyses we examine both short ru…
Biological and market responses of pine forests in the US Southeast to carbon fertilization
Global timber investments, 2005 to 2017
We estimated timber investment returns for 22 countries and 54 species/management regimes in 2017, for a range of global timber plantation species and countries at the stand level, using capital budgeting criteria, without land costs, at a real discount rate of 8%. Returns were estimated for the principal plantation countries in the Americas—Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Paraguay, Mexico, and the United States—as well as…
Assessing market power in the U.S. pulp and paper industry
Carbon savings with transatlantic trade in pellets: Accounting for market-driven effects
Exports of pellets from the United States (US) are growing significantly to meet the demand for renewable energy in the European Union. This transatlantic trade in pellets has raised questions about the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of these pellets and their effects on conventional forest product markets in the US. This paper examines the GHG intensity of pellets exported from the US using either forest biomass only or forest and agricultural b…
Econometric studies of non-industrial private forest management: A review and synthesis
Productivity measurement with improved index numbers: Application to the sawmills and planing mills industry of the U.S.: 1947–2000
Forest forecasts: Does individual heterogeneity matter for market and landscape outcomes
Economic and ecological impacts of wood chip production in North Carolina: An integrated assessment and subsequent applications
Estimating price compensation requirements for eco-certified forestry
