This article explores tax policy debates surrounding the economist Thomas Fitzgerald’s 1974 Report on The Contribution of the Mineral Industry to Australian Welfare for what they reveal about political attitudes to resource taxation and competing conceptualisations of the ‘national interest’ in 1970s Australia.
