Silvery dawn
This study investigates whether locally available silver contributed to early Piast coinage through high-resolution lead isotope and elemental analyses of 11th–early 12th-century coins from the Polish lands. The earliest royal issues, including key emissions of Bolesław I the Brave, form an isotopically coherent group consistent with the Pb–Ag ores of the Upper Silesia-Kraków Upland (US). Although these deposits were already known and exploited a…
Technological Insights into Early Medieval Slavic Lead-Glazed Pottery
This study examines the technological development and material composition of glazed pottery from Lesser Poland, highlighting two distinct glazing horizons spanning the 11th to 13th centuries. Employing analytical methods, including lead isotope analysis (MC-ICP-MS), SEM-EDS, and pXRD, the research establishes a connection between early glazing practices and regional polymetallic ore deposits from Upper Silesia. The findings reveal a significant …
Reading the Illegible
This article presents a 3D scanning method used to read the inscriptions on the oldest damaged tombstones at the Jewish cemetery in Chrzanów. To date, the technique has not been used at any other Jewish cemetery in Poland. The authors discuss the techniques and methods used, how the acquired data was processed and analyzed, and what results were obtained. The work presented here is part of a broader project to inventory Jewish cemeteries in the r…
The first isotopic evidence of Early Iron Age lead ore exploitation in the Silesian‐Krakow upland, Poland
The Bronze and Early Iron Ages witnessed a significant increase in trade relations driven by the search for valuable metals. This paper presents new insights into the use of galena from the Silesia and Krakow Upland region in southern Poland, known as the ‘Olkusz ore deposits’, within the context of metal ores in prehistoric Europe. Eleven lead‐based ornaments from Lusatian Urnfield Culture cemeteries were examined using lead isotope analysis. Th…
A New Find of an Axe-like Iron Bar from Kroczyce, Zawiercie County, Silesian Voivodeship
The article presents the discovery of an axe-like iron bar, found a few years ago in a limestone rock located northeast of Kroczyce, Silesian Voivodeship. In terms of form, this artefact corresponds to axe-like iron bars referred to in the literature as the Lesser Poland or Vistulan type. Similar artefacts are known from only a few sites in Poland, with their largest concentration recorded in Lesser Poland, where they are dated to the period from…
New Finds of Early Medieval Weights and Lead Objects from Dąbrowa Górnicza, Chruszczobród, and Chruszczobród-Piaski, Śląskie Province
The “Sztygarka” Municipal Museum in Dąbrowa Górnicza houses a collection of early medieval weights and lead objects recently discovered in the border area of Dąbrowa Górnicza, Chruszczobród and Chruszczobród-Piaski in Zawiercie district. They are discussed here for the first time. The paper presents the current state of research on silver and lead smelting in the early Middle Ages in the area now at the borderlands of Upper Silesia and Lesser Pol…
Bestandsaufnahme jüdischer Friedhöfe und ihrer Relikte zwischen Oberschlesien und Kleinpolen – ausgewählte Fragen
Since the year 1989, the inventories of Jewish cemeteries in Pilica, Olkusz (two cemeteries), Dąbrowa Górnicza, Sławków (now in the Krzykawka area, Bolesław municipality), Jaworzno, Chrzanów, Czeladź and Będzin have been carried out. In this article, the main issue will be the tombstones, which are called ‘a small architecture’. Here we focus on the typologisation of the gravestones with the special consideration of the vertical gravestone stele,…

Lead in the Bones of Cows from a Medieval Pb-Ag Metallurgical Settlement
Pb contents (13-53 mg kg−1) and pathological changes in almost complete cow skeletons discovered in graves adjacent to Pb and Ag smelting furnaces active in the Silesian-Cracovian region, in the mid-12th century are reported in the article. In addition to Pb, elements such as Zn, Cd, Fe, Mn, Cd, and Ba characteristic of Zn-Pb-Ag ores in the region were identified. Bone fragments and the soil in which they had lain for almost 800 years were examin…
