Strategic communication as lens-building and decision-making
Purpose The article suggests that decision-making, and especially epistemic duties in the formation of a basis for sound decision-making, should receive more attention in the didactics and pedagogy of strategy communication. Design/methodology/approach The article is conceptual-theoretical in nature but takes inspiration from a prior analysis of course contents of English-speaking strategic communication programs around the world. Findings The au…
Journalism in times of blurring boundaries between journalism, PR and advertising
The focus of this study are the blurring boundaries between journalism, PR and advertising from the perspective of journalism. The results of 27 semi-structured interviews with journalists, journalists/content producers and former journalists in Austria show that the blurring boundaries are a fact that is unlikely to go away. The use of social media is the driving force, but the lack of financial and human resources in journalism are also reasons…
Between progress and struggle
Purpose The paper aims to analyze the contribution of young academics to the field of public relations (PR) and shows which authors exert most influence on them. The study thereby contributes to the assessment of the state of the art of theory building in the field. The authors analyzed the study data against the background of two approaches on progress in the field: Nothhaft et al. ’s (2018) idea of strategic communication as an elusive concept …
The Meme’s-Eye View of Strategic Communication
The article argues that a memetic approach, or meme’s-eye view, could help bring together the strategic management view and the CCO-school. ‘Memes’ are understood as a second-order concept, i.e., as a reference to ‘memory traces’ in people’s minds and anchor-point of joint or collective intentionality. This view, it is argued, permits the conceptualization of communication as a resource. To illustrate, two cases are analyzed: 1) the Montagsdemos …
Peacocks, Penknives and Power
This article conceptualizes evolutionary theory as a bridge between existing theorizing in strategic communication on the one hand, the mind sciences on the other. It discusses six core concepts of evolutionary psychology that have a bearing on strategic communication theory: a) the human as a highly flexible social species; b) the regulation of individually-minded vs. collectively-minded behavior; c) advanced, symbolic communication as a mode of…
From Costly Signals and Competitive Niches to Reciprocity, Memes, and Memory Traces
This article gives an overview of the contributions in the special issue of the International Journal of Strategic Communication on evolutionary psychology and strategic communication. Forward-looking, it argues that recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have made it imperative for our discipline to come to grips with a biologized view of the human mind as an information-processing system that evolved to solve specific adaptive problems…
Agile Content Management
Corporate communication increasingly evolves into newsroom-like forms. In such structures, traditional approaches of functional differentiation (i.e., internal coms, media relations, public affairs, etc.) give way to topic-and content-centered approaches to corporate communication. Megatrends like globalization, digitalization, mediatization, and the decline of journalism have facilitated these developments. This study provides insights on agile …
Evolutionary Psychology
Evolutionary psychology suggests that the human mind consists of evolved cognitive mechanisms that developed through evolution by means of natural selection. These mechanisms evolved to solve long standing problems in the human ancestral environment. Cooperation in small foraging tribal communities of hunters and gatherers, and its use to gain reproductive advantages, was one of the problems the human mind has adapted to. Thus, this article argue…
Character assassination of CEOs in crises – Questioning CEOs’ character and values in corporate crises
This study explores the concept of character assassination in the field of corporate communication. We examine the perception of character traits and personal values of chief executive officers in Austria and Germany during corporate crises. Results suggest that character attacks mostly focus on a chief executive officer’s integrity, while a positive public perception of charisma seems to be related to a chief executive officer’s remaining in off…
Memes as games
This study proposes a theoretical framework for understanding how and why certain memes prevail as a form of political discourse online. Since memes are constantly changing as they spread, drawing inferences from a population of memes as concrete digital artifacts is a pressing challenge for researchers. This article argues that meme selection and mutation are driven by a cooperative combination of three types of communication logic: wasteful pla…
