  • Does extreme temperature exposure take a toll on mental health? Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

Open Access•Yanran Chen, Ruochen Sun et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2023

Long-term exposure to extreme temperatures could threaten individuals' mental health and psychological wellbeing. This study aims to investigate the long-term impact of cumulative exposure to extreme temperature. Differently from existing literature, we define extreme temperature exposure in relative terms based on local temperature patterns. Combining the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and environmental data from the U.S. Nationa…

  • Semantic search during creative thinking

Yanran Chen, Liang Zheng et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2022

  • The impact of Children’s gender on Parent’s mental health and cognition -- evidence from China

    Open Access•Yanran Chen, Ruochen Sun•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

With the growing and aging population round the world, it becomes increasingly important to understand what factors impact the mental health and cognition of the older generations in order to design effective interventions. In this paper, we investigate the effect of a child's gender on parental mental health and cognition in the context of one of the world's largest developing countries and the unique one-child policy, using China Family Panel S…

  • The Impact of Extreme Temperature Shocks on the Health Status of the Elderly in China

    Open Access•Yanran Chen, Xuezheng Qin•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

With the accelerating process of climate change, long-term exposure to extreme temperatures could threaten individuals' physical health, especially for the vulnerable population. This paper aims to investigate the long-term effects of extreme temperature exposure on the health of the elderly in the context of climate change and aging. Different from most of the existing literature in environmental economics, we define the relative extreme tempera…

  • Learning by explaining to oneself and a peer enhances learners’ theta and alpha oscillations while watching video lectures

Open Access•Zhongling Pi, Yi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2021

In the present study, we tested the effectiveness of three learning strategies (self‐explanation, learning by teaching and passive viewing) used by students who were learning from video lectures. Effectiveness was measured not only with traditional measures, but also with electroencephalography (EEG). Using a within‐subjects design, 26 university students viewed three sets of short lectures, each presenting a different set of English vocabulary w…
