  • West London Healthy Home and Environment (WellHome) Study

Open Access•Diana Varaden, Benjamin Barratt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

The relationship between indoor air quality and public health remains under-researched. WellHome is a transdisciplinary community-based study that will engage with residents to co-design feasible and acceptable research to quantify air pollution exposure in 100 homes in West London and examine its potential to exacerbate asthma symptoms in children. Sampling strategies such as using air quality monitors and passive samplers placed in kitchens, ch…

  • A Theopoetics in Ruins

    Heather Walton•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2020

This article takes as its starting point Bruno Latour’s reflections on the dereliction of theological discourse in contemporary culture. Acknowledging that theologians seek to avoid the question of how what “once had so much meaning [has] become absolutely meaningless,” it frames its reflections around John 2:19 and seeks to develop a “theopoetics of the broken form” that is located in the ruins of faith. To do so, it employs creative resources f…

  • Literature, theology and feminism

    Heather Walton•BOOK•Literature, Theology and Feminism•2019

This book generates a critical framework through which to interrogate the way in which religious feminists have employed women's literature in their texts. This is in order that both the way we read literature and the literature we read might be subject to scrutiny, and that new reading practices be developed. Having both the critical and constructive agenda, this is a book in two parts. The first part locates the study of the use of women's writ…

  • We have never been theologians

    Heather Walton•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2018

This article makes a clear challenge to portrayals of secularism and secularity that have become hugely influential within contemporary theology. It demonstrates how the theological concepts of immanence and transcendence have been mobilised as ciphers in cultural debate and argues that this has perpetuated unhelpful binary thinking about faith and culture. Drawing upon the work of Bruno Latour it constructs a case for an alternative mode of theo…

  • Invitation to Research in Practical Theology

Zöe Bennett, Elaine Graham et al.•BOOK•Invitation to Research in…•2018

Practical theology as a subject area has grown and become more sophisticated in its methods and self-understanding over the last few decades. This book provides a complete and original research primer in the major theories, approaches and methods at the cutting-edge of research in contemporary practical theology. It represents a reflection on the very practice of the discipline itself, its foundational questions and epistemological claims. Each c…

  • Seeking Wisdom in Practical Theology

    Heather Walton•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2014

This article addresses the diverse ways in which Practical Theology has sought to understand contemporary culture and the way we live now. Through comparing Empirical Theology and Feminist Practical Theology an analysis is offered of differing epistemological frameworks and research strategies. However, these approaches have far more in common than may have been realised. Both are linked to the understanding of phronesis set out in the work of Do…

  • Calls to Preach

    Heather Walton•ARTICLE•Practical Theology•2009

This article uses autoethnographic techniques to construct an understanding of preaching as both calling and work. This process raises questions relating to the formation of the preacher, the sources that are drawn upon in the construction of the sermon and the authority that is claimed for the message given. It is demonstrated that an embodied understanding of the work of the preacher challenges dominant models and points towards ways in which i…

  • You Have To Say You Cannot Speak

    Heather Walton•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•2009•Cited by: 1

This article reflects upon the problems I experience in finding a methodology for public theology. A number of current models are explored but are not found to resolve the difficulties experienced in articulating a progressive theological contribution to public debate. The article goes on to argue that feminist theology provides helpful resources for provisional, pragmatic and creative theological reflection. However, a more radical critique of t…

  • Re-vision and Revelation

    Open Access•Heather Walton•ARTICLE•Feminist Theology•2003

This article explores contrasting strategies in feminist critical theory in order to interrogate divergent fictional representations of women's spiri tual power. The first critical strategy uses the resources of gynocriticism to present a positive view of women's authorship, agency and ability to revi sion religious forms. The second demonstrates poststructuralist concerns with the repressed other/ s of dominant cultural forms and the power these…
