Unchaining Freedom from Capitalism
The concept of freedom drives meaning in the United States, but the meaning of freedom is often ruptured from the historical struggles that produced that meaning. Drawing on intellectual and political traditions in the North Atlantic world, W. E. B. Du Bois critiques this fetishization of freedom. Analyzing and explaining how Du Bois uses this tradition to critique the meaning of freedom sheds light on how political theology can respond to presen…
Decolonial Love
Bringing together theologies of liberation and decolonial thought, Decolonial Love interrogates colonial frameworks that shape Christian thought and legitimize structures of oppression and violence within Western modernity. In response to the historical situation of colonial modernity, the book offers a decolonial mode of theological reflection and names a historical instance of salvation that stands in conflict with Western modernity. Seeking a …
Theological Thinking and Eurocentric Epistemologies
Motivated by the work of scholars of Africana religions, this essay questions whether theology as a mode of critical reflection that depends on Christian-centric understandings of revelation can contribute toward a liberation from colonial relations of power. Actualizing liberation in a meaningful way requires a liberation from Eurocentric loci of rationality, yet theologians' movement toward liberation often proceeds precisely from such a site—n…
Unbearable Poverties and the Future of Liberation Theology
In the autumn of 2016, the Jesuit liberation theologian Georges De Schrijver, one of the founders of the Centre for Liberation Theologies (CLT) in Leuven, Belgium, passed away while teaching in the
James Baldwin's Decolonial Love as Religious Orientation
In this article, I use the concept of decolonial love to synthesize the religious and theological dimensions of James Baldwin's work. I argue that Baldwin's decolonial love functions as an ultimate orientation within his work, and that decolonial love is an orientation and a praxis that is a form of revelation. The revelatory capacity of decolonial love, which particularly comes out of the lived experiences on the underside of Western modernity, …
The Option for the Poor as a Decolonial Option
Decolonial theorists pose a new challenge to liberation theology: Does its formulation of the option for the poor address the coloniality that distinguishes the modern context? This article argues that an option for the poor within theology, as a decolonial option, has to retrieve and deepen two central concerns of liberation theologians’ early articulation of the option for the poor: (1) the commitment to the poor and the way the divine is manif…
Nat Turner’s Rebellion as a Process of Conversion
This article considers Nat Turner’s 1831 slave rebellion as the culmination of a process of conversion. In adopting this stance, this article argues that Turner is right in his understanding that the praxis of his rebellion was a participation in God’s grace, even when the nature of that praxis fell outside the ethical norms of mainstream theology. This work places Turner’s Christian faith within the context of the Christianity lived out by slave…
